How many things can I bungle in a day? Well, let's start with the fact that I left last night's pizza out. Can I have it still? Probably not, but at least I closed the box and the cats didn't get into it. But, speaking of, it is time to feed the cats, so I attempt to refill the tower dispenser of cat food. I did not confirm that the lid was fully affixed, however, so I poured cat food all over the floor. They were a lot more excited about it than I was. 😸
Finally cleaned up, I start getting ready for work. Last spring I took up a side gig as a crossing guard at a local school (not many D&D games being requested at 8am, so why not?). I grab the heavy rain jacket as I leave the door, only to think "it's so warm, I'd rather get a little wet than overheat" and switch to the light vest. As I finished walking the 5 blocks, I heard Indiana Jones' Knight Templar of the Holy Grail "you chose poorly" echo in my head as the clouds tore open. It rained so heavily, that tree branches crashed to the ground within a few feet of where I was standing, and the crosswalk flooded. It stopped raining just as the school bell rang to indicate the start of the day and I began my walk home - where I discovered several street intersections were still flooded. 🌧 🌧
When I finally got home, I realized my phone case had some water seep in, so I take the phone out and put it into a bag with rice. Hours go by, the phone is finally dry (but the battery is dead) so I begin giving it a once over to check for any remaining moisture before I plug it in - when I realize that there is now rice stuck in the charging port. First thing I do? grab a pair of metal tweezers and gingerly attempt to pry the rice loose. When that doesn't work, I look online only to see the first recommendation is not to use anything that can conduct electricity to avoid ruining the charging port. And all this is before noon, when I realize I missed breakfast. 🍽
Well folks, this is when all I can do is laugh at myself. The phone is charging via charging pad right now, and I can't seem to stop chuckling to myself. This series of events prompted a discussion with one of my tabletop players regarding Murphy's Law and Sod's Law (the UK version of the saying)- which led me down the rabbit hole of "where did this phrase start?" Well, let me tell you, I've since learned there are many variations of the saying - all with disputed origins - that go to show we can't control when bad things happen, we can't do much about it- but we can prevent ourselves from reacting badly to it. As my favorite Chumbawamba song goes "you're never going to keep me down" 🛁 👶
TL;DR: I rolled a Natural 1 this morning (the poorest result possible), and just kept on rolling 1s as the day continued. Some days are just like that. But at least you know what song I listen to when it happens to me.
