Vermont Oxford Network Transforming data into action to help save babies lives.

Vermont Oxford Network (VON) is a nonprofit voluntary collaboration of health care professionals working together as an interdisciplinary community to change the landscape of neonatal care. Founded in 1988, VON is now comprised of teams of health professionals representing neonatal intensive care units and level I and II care centers around the world, in support of our mission to improve the quality and safety of medical care for newborn infants and their families through a coordinated program of research, education, and quality improvement projects.

This October, during Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, we pause to remember the infants whose lives ended during their NICU stay and to honor the families and care teams affected by their loss. Infant loss is not limited to one gestational age or birth weight—it affects families across the full spectrum of neonatal care.

At VON, we use data to understand where improvement is needed and to help drive meaningful change. We encourage members to examine mortality outcomes alongside the factors that may contribute before and during an infant’s NICU stay.

Together, we can learn, improve, and work toward reducing mortality year over year. Need support reviewing your data? Please reach out to us.

At VON, our mission is to improve the lives of the infants and families we serve. And to do that, we must learn to treat families as the primary caregivers and learn how to best communicate with them. At the VON Quality Congress this November, we are so grateful to have Kelley and Thomas French join us to talk on the importance of the language we use with families. We hope you'll join us!

Kelley Benham French and Thomas French are award-winning journalists, educators, and storytellers whose work explores the power of narrative, reporting, and language. Together, they are the authors of Juniper: The Girl Who Was Born Too Soon, a deeply personal story inspired by the extremely premature birth of their daughter. They bring decades of experience in journalism, teaching, and narrative craft to a conversation about how words shape understanding, connection, and care.

As part of our new membership structure supporting a learning community for all members, all VON members can now access the QI Foundations course in Members' Area. This course is useful as an introduction to QI and to build a common understanding of QI processes among the entire NICU team, and it is also useful as a practical guide that provides a step-by-step roadmap to complete any improvement project. Also, it includes 3.5 CEs! Win/win!

To access this course, log into your VON account via the VON website. Having trouble? Reach out to us and we'll get you connected!

Project Warm Welcome, the new membership wide VON Collaborative starting in 2027 is just around the corner...so let's see what the data tells us.

Over the last 10 years, we have seen slow and steady improvement, however we still have a long way to go! There were more than 65,000 infants cared for across 1,197 VON member sites worldwide in 2025 with admission temperature outside the normal range of 36.5-37.5. As you can see, admission hypothermia is still an issue in 2026 and together, we can do better!

September 30 is NICU Awareness Day. Data from our birth year 2025 Expanded Database reminds us that every NICU admission is more than a number—and the NICU journey is about far more than prematurity or low birth weight. Behind every admission is an infant fighting to grow stronger, a family navigating uncertainty, and a care team providing extraordinary support.

Today, and every day, we honor these infants and families and reaffirm our commitment to turning data into meaningful change—improving care, strengthening outcomes, and helping every family move forward with hope.
