Spoonful Herbals We are a non-profit organization rooted in our deep love and respect for plants and wild places. Learn more at spoonfulherbals.org

Spoonful Herbals is a collaborative effort for those with a deep love of plants and wild places, reverence for the body and spirit, and a joy when sharing their work and creations with the world. We work to make herbal medicine available to the so-called Northern Vermont community (unceded Abenaki territory). We host various Herb Mobs (medicinal plant gleaning events), offer an herbal apprenticeship program, and offer seasonal herbal remedy CSA shares.

Have extra berries tucked away in your freezer? We’d love to put them to good use! 🌿

We’re gathering elderberries, aronia berries, black currants, and sea berries for our October medicine making. Fresh berries or frozen berries up to five years old are welcome, along with garlic for Fire C***r!

Your harvest will help us prepare 300 bottles for the Intervale’s Fair Share, plus Elderberry Syrup and Fire C***r for Rose Core Collective in collaboration with Railyard Apothecary. Volunteers can contact the Intervale Center to sign up to help (and learn!), and get City Market member worker credit for their time.

For ten years, this community’s generosity has helped us share herbal medicine with our neighbors. This is mutual flourishing, caring for one another with the abundance we have to share.

Email [email protected] to contribute. We can pick up donations in the greater Burlington area!

Did anyone else notice how much reishi appeared this year? We kept seeing those beautiful mushrooms, so it felt like the right season to bring back our Yellow Dock & Reishi Gingersnaps. 🍄

Ingredients
1 cup sugar
¾ cup butter
1 egg
¼ cup molasses
2 cups flour, replacing 2–4 tablespoons with powdered reishi, yellow dock, or another herbal powder of your choice
2 teaspoons baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground cloves
½ teaspoon ground ginger
Extra sugar for rolling

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Cream the butter and sugar, then beat in the egg and molasses. Add the dry ingredients and mix well. Chill the dough, roll it into balls, and coat each one in sugar. Bake until the edges are set.

A little of the season’s abundance, tucked into a gingersnap. 🌿
