Gratitude for my Sunday morning ashtanga practice. For beginning again and again. For the shared language in a shared space. And gratitude for my cosmos that just bloomed.

Day 1 Masters Events

Enjoyed an afternoon with David Kessler and Paul Denniston.

Grief & loss is so often underneath what we come to therapy trying to address. To be human and to live connected and in community and in family is to both love and lose.

So often we want to rage at grief for joining us on our daily journey—indignant that we thought we were promised a life without the depth of pain.

I was reminded yesterday that there is, of course, no right way to grieve. Some people logically move through it; some people wail.

From my training in narrative therapy, I often ask folks who’ve lost someone if they mind telling me a story, so I might understand what that person meant to them. Then I might ask them, if I could interview this person, what they might tell me about themselves—so I can also understand how this person experienced the connection.

And then I want to know how they will carry this person forward—when will they remember them, how will they honor them, how will they carry them in their heart?

And then the question is about how we want to walk through life in relationship to the many griefs we will carry.

Art is about being intentional about frame and pattern. Finding the visual rhythm.

In therapy, we hope to uncover our own patterns so we may consciously understand the rhythms, connections, and movement in our life.
