hEDS is estimated to affect about 1 in 500 people.
Even so, people wait an average of nearly two decades between their first symptoms and a diagnosis. That’s not okay, and we can do something about it by learning about the diagnostic process from a patient perspective.
In this talk I’ll cover:
• Why the Beighton score is only one piece of the diagnosis
• How hEDS, POTS, and MCAS connect as one multi-system picture, not three separate problems
• A case study that puts the the diagnostic process into practice
• Why so many people fall through the gaps between specialties, and what can change that
• Practical first steps in care for providers that say “I don’t know how to screen for that” or “there isn’t anything we can do about hypermobility”, because they’re just flat out wrong.
While I built this talk with clinicians in mind, it’s open to everyone. As you know, patients are often the ones educating their providers on these conditions. If you want support with the diagnostic process, this would be a perfect time to learn more about what the process is actually like and how to advocate for yourself.
The most helpful thing you could do is forward this to a provider, student, or care team member who might benefit. That’s how awareness spreads.
