Most people only put their arms over their head a couple times a day so it's no wonder why so many people have stiff shoulders as they get older.

Hanging is a great way to improve shoulder mobility and strength. Whether it's just holding the bar with your feet on the bar to get some over head time, or working on pullups.

Spend a couple minutes a week working on hanging and your neck and shoulders will feel better in the long run

After an injury or surgery the last thing you want is to also lose your strength and conditioning.

Most rehab only focuses on the injured area, but that leaves the rest of your body to get weaker and less fit. It also removes you from the gym or sport that is important to your overall mental and physical health.

We will find ways to work around your injury to maintain cardio, strength, and keep you training while you recover.

It's not that the exercises you see on the internet are bad. It's that they are not specific to you.

- how often
- how many sets, reps, weights
- which exercises are important
- what if it's painful
- how to adjust your current program and daily activities
- technique

Real progress comes from a plan that is specific to you.

Reflection #6 of the last 5 years as a PT: it's ok to not have all the answers.

Continuing to learn and improve is what makes PT interesting. I think being on auto pilot and not improving is what leads to many PTs feeling burned out.

I'll never have all the answers, but I think my patients can trust that I am going to try to figure it out if I don't know.

Reflection #5 of the last 5 years as a physical therapist: getting people moving more, stronger, and fitter goes a long way to improving pain.

The hard part isnt telling someone to move more, it's helping someone make a real plan that fits their ability, schedule, equipment, and motivation.

It's not uncommon for people to go to multiple providers to "find out what's wrong" only to be left in the same amount of pain.

Getting people to move more, get stronger, and fitter improves so many symptoms over time and makes people more resilient to life

Reflection #4 of the last 5 years as a physical therapist: people want to be heard, not just tell their story again.

Pain is complex and can't be boiled down to knee pain, or a disc herniation.

How the pain affects your life, how it makes you feel, and expectations around pain all impact care.

Reflection #3 from the last 5 years as a PT

Seeing people cycle through the same pain over and over drove me crazy. Someone would have pain, they'd go to PT, pain would go away but there was no long term plan. Then pain would return and they would repeat the cycle.

The long term follow up is crucial for long term results. It's important to me to go with people through phases of life and help them progress things and work through long term health not just short term pain relief.

This is a big reason why I do things that I do.
- people can text me directly
- people can come in regularly to make sure they are on track without needing to jump through hoops
- keeping people in the gym while they have injuries and giving modifications as needed
- 65+ fitness classes to address long term health and fitness not just pain

Reflection #2 from the last 5 years as a PT

People don't come into PT with a blank slate

They often have expectations of what PT is and have often seen other providers for the same issue.

The medicalization of pain has caused people to think that pain needs to be fixed through injections, surgery, and meds instead of movement. And that imaging will tell you the whole story of what's going on.

Treating real people looks a lot different than just giving a couple exercises.

5 years as a PT and I've learned a lot!

Treating actual people is a lot different than it looks in the textbook or on social media.

2 people can have the diagnosis on paper and respond very differently.

Someone's history, exercise habits, sleep, diet occupation, stress, and symptom irritability all have a much bigger role on treatment.
