Two Different Seasons. One Faithful God.

One port coming out. One port going in.

I’ve been thinking a lot about two families who are part of our Hometown Health System family. Two mothers, two children, and two very different moments in their journeys with leukemia.

For Kaelan and her family, today was a day of celebration. After the treatments, hospital visits, sleepless nights, uncertainty, and countless prayers, Kaelan reached a milestone that means so much more than most of us could ever understand. She was having her port removed.

For Hudson and his family, today looked very different. Hudson was having his port placed, taking another step into a journey that no parent ever wants their child to face.

One mother looking back at how far they’ve come. Another looking ahead, praying for strength for the days to come.

I haven’t been able to get those two moments out of my mind.

Because somewhere today, one family is celebrating an answered prayer while another is still asking God for one. One family is looking back at a mountain they never thought they could climb, while another is standing at the bottom wondering how they’ll ever make it to the top.

And I believe God is present in both places.

When I asked these mothers if I could share their stories, both wanted to use their experiences to spread awareness, encourage others, and share the hope they’ve found in Jesus.

I asked Kaelan’s mother what she would tell a parent just beginning this journey. Her words were powerful.

“You are stronger than you know, braver than you feel, and never walking this road alone. There is a light at the end of this tunnel, even when the bend in the road makes it hard to see.”

Those words carry a little more weight when they come from someone who has walked the road.

When I asked Hudson’s mother what has helped her through these first difficult days, she shared how much the love and prayers of others have meant to her family. She talked about the reassurance from doctors and nurses, praying with the anesthesiologist and nurses before Hudson’s procedure, and listening to the song “Still Waters” over and over while praying it over her little boy.

I keep thinking about that moment in the hospital. A mother preparing for her child’s procedure, surrounded by medical professionals, taking a moment to pray together.

Sometimes we look for God in the extraordinary, but I wonder how often He’s reminding us of His presence through the people He places around us.

That song, “Still Waters,” brings me to Psalm 23. David reminds us that the Lord is our Shepherd, leading us beside still waters and restoring our souls. But he also reminds us that even when we walk through the darkest valley, God is with us.

The same Shepherd who leads us beside peaceful waters walks with us through the valley.

Kaelan’s mother also shared Scriptures that have meant so much to her family. Luke 1:37 reminds us that nothing is impossible with God. Deuteronomy 31:6 reminds us to be strong and courageous because He will never leave or forsake us. And Isaiah 41:10 reminds us that He will strengthen us, help us, and uphold us.

Those verses don’t promise that life will always be easy. They remind us that we never have to face it alone.

I don’t understand why children like Kaelan and Hudson have to experience something like leukemia. I don’t know why parents who would give anything to protect their children sometimes have to stand beside a hospital bed feeling helpless.

But I do believe God meets us in those moments. I believe He uses people to carry us when we don’t have the strength to keep going. And I believe our greatest hope is found in Jesus Christ, who gave His life and rose again so that through faith in Him, we can have forgiveness, new life, and the promise of eternity.

Romans 12:15 tells us to rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn.

Today, that Scripture feels especially meaningful.

We have an opportunity to celebrate with Kaelan’s family while standing beside Hudson’s family. To be thankful for one milestone while praying for the journey ahead. To remind both families that they are loved, supported, and never forgotten.

And maybe that’s what I hope we all take away from their stories.

Hold your children a little longer. Be thankful for the ordinary moments. Check on the people you love. Pray for those who are hurting. And when you have the opportunity to help someone, don’t wait for the perfect words. Just show up.

Because somewhere tonight, Kaelan’s family is looking back with gratitude at how far they’ve come, while Hudson’s family is looking ahead with faith, hope, and prayers for healing.

Two mothers who love their children more than words can express. Two families walking through seasons they never would have chosen.

One port coming out. One port going in.

Two different seasons. One faithful God.

The God who walks with us through the darkest valleys is the same God who stands with us in our moments of celebration. He’s not only there when our prayers are answered. He’s there while we’re still waiting.

Please join me and our Hometown Health System family in praying for Kaelan, Hudson, and every child battling leukemia. Pray for healing, strength, peace, and the families who are walking beside them.

And remember, even when we can’t see what’s around the next bend in the road, we can trust the One who is walking beside us.

Sometimes, that’s enough to give us the strength to take one more step.

Behind every prescription, every patient interaction, and every successful day at Hometown Pharmacy is an incredible team of pharmacy technicians who make it all possible!

Today, we celebrate the heart, dedication, compassion, and hard work of the individuals who are truly the backbone of our pharmacy operations. 💊

From the long days and busy moments to the laughter, friendships, and memories made along the way, our technicians are so much more than employees. They are the heart of our Hometown family.

💊🖤 HAPPY NATIONAL PHARMACY WEEK!

This week, we proudly celebrate the incredible pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy support staff who make up the heart of Hometown Health System!

As a pharmacist-founded and pharmacist-led healthcare organization, we understand that pharmacy is so much more than prescriptions. It is about building relationships, breaking down barriers to healthcare, advocating for patients, and ensuring that every individual has access to the care and medications they deserve.

From our hometown communities in rural Kentucky to the patients and families we serve across the Commonwealth, our pharmacy teams are at the forefront of our mission to transform healthcare delivery.

Whether providing community and specialty pharmacy services, coordinating complex medications, supporting patients in recovery, or helping individuals navigate transitions in care, our team demonstrates that compassion, clinical expertise, and a commitment to serving others can truly change lives.

To every pharmacist, technician, and team member who pours their heart into serving our patients each day: THANK YOU! Your dedication, resilience, and passion are the foundation of everything we are building.

We are proud to be pharmacist-led, but even prouder of the extraordinary team that brings our mission to life every single day.

One Hometown. One Mission. Bridging Hope & Healing. 🖤

Wellness Wednesday 💚 Our event is one of our sponsorship commitments to our community to inspire our community to get out there and get moving. Our Specialty Pharmacy Certified Pharmacy Technician Leanna Burress, and her hubby Robby Burress have participated every year in our 5K!

Wellness is more than a number on a scale or a once-a-year checkup. It’s the small, consistent choices we make to care for our body, mind, and overall well-being.

This week, take a moment to check in with yourself. Have you been drinking enough water? Getting enough rest? Taking your medications as prescribed? Moving your body? Keeping up with preventive care? Making space for your mental health?

You don’t have to change everything overnight. Sometimes better health starts with one simple step: scheduling the appointment you’ve been putting off, taking a walk, asking for help, getting your blood pressure checked, or talking openly with someone about how you’re really doing.

At Hometown Health System, we believe healthcare should support the whole person—not just treat a problem after it happens. From preventive and primary care to behavioral health, pharmacy, specialty services, and care coordination, we are here to help you build a healthier future.

Your health matters. Your story matters. And you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Our staff is so passionate about connecting in the community these photos represents something much bigger than attending an event. It represents why overdose prevention, substance use disorder treatment, harm reduction, recovery, and second chances are critical public-health priorities for Hometown Health System.

Because these aren't just statistics or another Facebook post.

We need to normalize harm reduction. We need to normalize that this impacts every hometown. We need to normalize partnership and discussions instead of who is going to take care or fix "those people" They are someone's daughter. Son. Mother. Father. Sister. Brother. Wife. Husband. Aunt. Uncle. Friend.

They are families. They are hometowns. They are brothers and sisters in Christ.

And substance use disorder can affect generations.

KENTUCKY IS MAKING PROGRESS — BUT OUR WORK IS FAR FROM OVER.

According to the most recent Kentucky Drug Overdose Fatality Report, 1,110 Kentuckians lost their lives to a drug overdose in 2025.

That represents a 22.9% decrease from 2024 and the fourth consecutive year Kentucky has seen overdose deaths decline. It is progress worth recognizing—but 1,110 lives lost means 1,110 families still experienced a phone call, a knock at the door, an empty chair, or a future that changed forever.

In 2025, methamphetamine was identified in 49.5% of Kentucky overdose deaths and fentanyl in 45.4%. Kentucky also distributed more than 182,000 doses of Narcan, demonstrating just how important naloxone access has become in saving lives across our Commonwealth.

And overdose is only one part of the story.

SAMHSA estimates that 17.2% of Kentuckians age 12 and older experienced a substance use disorder in the past year—roughly 1 in every 6 people.

That means nearly every Kentucky community has been touched by this disease.

KNOW THE SIGNS. CARRY NARCAN. YOU COULD SAVE A LIFE.

An opioid overdose may look like someone who cannot be awakened, has very slow or stopped breathing, makes choking, gurgling or unusual snoring sounds, has discolored lips or skin, or has very small “pinpoint” pupils. If you aren't sure whether someone is experiencing an overdose, treat it like an overdose. Naloxone is safe and can reverse an opioid overdose when given in time.

If you suspect an opioid overdose:

Give naloxone/Narcan immediately if available and call 911.
For nasal Narcan, place the device into one nostril and press the plunger firmly. If the person does not respond or begin breathing normally, give another dose with a new device after 2–3 minutes and continue as needed until emergency help arrives.
Keep the person breathing if possible, place them on their side to help prevent choking, and stay with them.
Do not assume they are safe because they wake up. Naloxone can wear off while the opioid is still in the body, so emergency medical evaluation remains important.

Anyone can carry naloxone. You do not have to be a healthcare professional to save someone's life.

Kentucky offers naloxone through pharmacies, local health departments, community organizations and harm-reduction programs. Some locations provide it free of charge, and Kentucky Medicaid covers up to two naloxone kits during a rolling 30-day period.

IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU LOVE IS STRUGGLING, PLEASE REACH OUT.

You do not have to wait until someone overdoses to ask for help.

If someone is experiencing an overdose or immediate medical emergency, call 911.

For a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988. Kentucky's 988 Lifeline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year**, and family members can also reach out when they are worried about someone they love.

Kentuckians looking for treatment can also contact the KY HELP Call Center at 833-859-4357 (833-8KY-HELP) for assistance connecting with treatment and recovery resources.

If someone is going to use substances alone, Kentucky's naloxone resources also identify the Never Use Alone hotline: 1-877-696-1996, available 24/7 to help reduce the risk of a fatal overdose.

AND HOMETOWN IS HERE.

Hometown Health System is accepting new patients, and we would be honored to support you or someone you love through their recovery journey.

Our vision goes far beyond writing a prescription.

It is primary care.
Behavioral health.
Psychiatric care.
Medication management.
Substance use disorder treatment.
Pharmacy support.
Care coordination.
Prevention.
Recovery.
And helping people rebuild their health, their families, and their lives.

Because recovery isn't simply about stopping a substance.

It can mean repairing relationships. Rebuilding trust. Finding employment. Reuniting families. Managing physical and mental health. Learning how to live differently. Finding purpose again. And breaking a cycle that may have affected a family for generations.

We believe people deserve healthcare without judgment.

We believe people deserve another opportunity.

We believe recovery is possible.

And we believe that someone's hardest chapter should never be the only chapter the world gets to read.

Thank you, to all our staff your stories and your passion and for representing Hometown and continuing to stand beside individuals and families affected by substance use disorder.

This is why we show up.

This is more than healthcare.
This is more than medication.
This is about people.
This is about families.
This is about saving lives.

Bridging hope and healing, one hometown at a time. ❤️

THE NUMBERS TELL US THIS STORY IS FAR TOO COMMON.
**CONTENT NOTE: Childhood sexual abuse and trauma**

In Kentucky, 65% of adults reported experiencing at least one Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) growing up.

And 14.7% of Kentucky adults reported experiencing sexual abuse during childhood — nearly 1 in every 7 Kentuckians.

Behind every statistic is a person.

A child who grew up.

An adult who learned how to survive.

And sometimes, a person who carried the effects of what happened to them for years before ever understanding why.

Today, one of our own is choosing to tell her story.

At Hometown Health System, we are incredibly grateful to Cindy Phillips, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, for having the courage to share something deeply personal — not because it is easy to talk about, but because she hopes her vulnerability might help someone else recognize their own pain, seek help, or simply realize they are not alone.

Cindy's Story

For a long time, I didn’t understand how much of what happened to me as a child had shaped the woman I became.

As a teenager, I became promiscuous. Looking back, I realize I was trying to find control over something that had taken control away from me far too young.

I also developed a deep resistance to being told what to do by men. I didn’t want a man controlling me, making decisions for me, or telling me who I was supposed to be.

It took me many years to learn to cope with pain I didn’t know how to process.

As I grew older, I began to heal. I began to understand that what happened to me was not my fault.

I can’t change what happened to that little girl, but I can love her. I can protect her. And I can tell her that she survived.

I am more than what happened to me.

— Cindy Phillips, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Childhood trauma does not always stay in childhood. It can influence relationships, boundaries, self-worth, trust, behavior, mental health, physical health, and the ways a person learns to protect themselves long after the traumatic experience has ended.

Sometimes healing begins simply by understanding the connection. And sometimes it begins when another person has the courage to say:

This happened to me too.

Cindy is sharing her story because there may be someone reading this who has spent years questioning their own behaviors, emotions, relationships, or reactions without understanding where they came from.

There may be someone who has never told anyone.

Someone who still carries shame that never belonged to them.

Or someone who needs to know that what happened during one chapter of their life does not get to write the rest of their story.

You can survive.
You can heal.
You can reclaim your story.
And you are so much more than what happened to you.

Thank you, Cindy, for being willing to turn something incredibly painful into a source of hope for someone else.

At Hometown, we believe the TEST that we face and overcome turn into TESTIMONIES. We believe healthcare is about caring for the whole person — their physical health, mental health, experiences, challenges, and the story that brought them to where they are today.

What is a PBM — and why does it matter to your hometown pharmacy?

Most people have never heard of a PBM until it affects what they pay at the pharmacy counter.
A PBM stands for Pharmacy Benefit Manager. These are the middlemen that work between insurance companies, drug manufacturers, and pharmacies to decide:

* which medications are covered
* what your copay will be
* what pharmacy you can use
* how much your pharmacy gets paid

Here’s the problem: many independent pharmacies are being paid less than what the medication actually costs to fill. That means on many prescriptions, your local pharmacy is losing money just to take care of you.

While big chains and major corporations have more leverage, small hometown pharmacies are often squeezed by a system controlled by insurance companies, PBMs, and large pharmaceutical interests. These monopolies are making it harder for independent pharmacies to survive — even though we are the ones who know our patients by name, deliver personalized care, and serve communities that larger companies often overlook.

When you support your local independent pharmacy, you are supporting:
❤️ personalized care
❤️ local jobs
❤️ better access for rural communities
❤️ pharmacists who advocate for you
❤️ healthcare that stays in your hometown

We believe patients deserve choice, transparency, and affordable access to medications — not a system that puts profits over people.

We are thankful for the support of many local, state, and federal law makers on both sides of the isle that support free enterprise, increased checks and balances, and supporting consumers whom have been impacted by these unlawful practices.

Please support local. Support independent pharmacy. Support hometown care.

We stand alongside many incredible locally owned pharmacy partners, if we aren’t a good choice please support local pharmacies a few great options are North Century, Adair Drug, Columbia Pharmacy, HealthFirst in Greensburg, Eastridge Phelps, CertaCare in Columbia, just to name a few local heroes who are supporting patients right here in the central Kentucky area!

💊 PSA from your Hometown Pharmacy team: We wish we controlled your copay… but we don’t! 😅

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that the pharmacy decides what you pay for your prescription. The truth? When we process your prescription, your insurance company sends us the price — we’re just the messenger (and the button pushers). 😂

But that doesn’t mean we stop there. ❤️

At Hometown Pharmacy, our team will always look for ways to help when we can — whether that means checking manufacturer savings programs, exploring lower-cost options with your provider, or comparing available pricing.

Because to us, you’re more than a prescription number. We know our patients, we advocate for our patients, and we’re always in your corner.

Every prescription. Every patient. Every time. 💙
