What gets activated for you when money becomes tense in a relationship?

We talk a lot about money when we talk about relationships.

How much should a man make? Should he make more than his woman? If she earns significantly more, is she “settling” by choosing him?

But I think there’s a deeper conversation underneath all of that.

Money matters. Financial responsibility matters. Lifestyle compatibility matters. Nobody is saying they don’t.

But somewhere along the way, we started using income to measure things income was never designed to measure.

Character. Manhood. Worth. Emotional safety. Trustworthiness. Presence. The ability to build with someone.

And sometimes both men and women get caught in the same trap.

She may think, “If he doesn’t make enough, he isn’t enough.”

He may think, “If I don’t make enough, I’m not enough.”

Different words. Same measurement system.
Not telling people what standards they should have. Not telling women to accept irresponsibility. Not telling men that providing doesn’t matter.

It’s about questioning some of the beliefs we’ve inherited about money, masculinity, relationships, and human worth.

So here’s the question I want to leave you with:

If the money disappeared tomorrow, what would still make you choose this person?

You can love each other deeply and still make each other feel alone.

That is one of the quietest ways relationships begin to erode.

Not because love is gone.

But because fear starts leading the conversation.

One person reaches for closeness because distance feels painful.

The other pulls away because emotional intensity feels overwhelming.

Then both people start protecting themselves.

The pursuer feels abandoned.

The withdrawer feels pressured.

And before long, the pattern becomes louder than the love.

The healing begins when we stop asking,
“What is wrong with you?”

And start asking,
“What is this pattern trying to protect?”

Because beneath pursuit is often a need for reassurance.

And beneath withdrawal is often a need for safety.

The pattern is the enemy.
