Sore knees after stairs, hiking, or running? Your knee often takes direction from the joints above and below it. Dr. Kyle walks through two simple self-checks to start with 👇
🦵 Check 1: Single Leg Step Down (hip control)
Stand on your sore-side leg and find your balance.
Bring your other leg slightly forward.
Slowly lower that heel toward the floor, then come back up.
Try it a few times. It’s harder than it looks!
👀 What to watch for: Big wobbles, or your hip shifting out to the side. That can point to a hip control issue affecting how force travels down into your knee.
🦶 Check 2: Knee to Wall (ankle mobility)
Throw up “the horns” hand sign 🤘 and place it against a wall as a spacer.
Line your big toe up with your fingers.
Keep your heel flat on the floor and your hands on the wall.
Slowly bring your knee toward the wall, only as far as is comfortable.
👀 What to watch for: If your knee can’t reach the wall, your ankle mobility may be limited. Pay attention to where you feel it:
Pinching in the front of the ankle → likely the joint itself
A big stretch in the back of the leg → a great place to start is working on calf and soleus mobility
Knee reaches the wall easily → your ankle probably isn’t the issue, so keep looking
⚠️ If you have sharp pain, significant swelling, or a knee that limits your day, get it properly assessed. These checks are a starting point, not a diagnosis.
Here for you. Always! 🤜🤛
