You know when you go to a restaurant and the server is able to suggest exactly which salad and entree combination you might like based on your preferences?

Or when a chef just knows which spices will complement a dish because of aroma, texture, and flavor profile?

A good coach is like an excellent server or chef. They understand individual preferences and sensory inputs. You don’t need a coach to tell you want to do. You can get that off of AI.

But AI can’t pair movement inputs.

These two exercises pair exceptionally well together, like peanut butter and jelly. Or tarragon on chicken.

You should totally try it. And yes, there is a reason they pair well together. But this is IG and I have already written way more text than the average person will read.

“Helpful cueing that I have never heard before. Really creates activation in both directions that “breaking the bar” doesn’t.” ~Just Hanging challenge participant

Someone asked me recently if I think about the focal points I suggest. The subtle ones. The ones that are a little weird (but they are only weird because it’s a slightly different perspective).

The answer is yes. And if something feels hard or unattainable, I watch video, identify where the weight shift fell apart, and approach the movement again, differently.

The principles of coaching movement are actually less complicated than the internet would have you believe if you know what you are looking for.

TLDR: the set-up matters.

Don’t follow me for more tips about hanging (I don’t post regularly enough for that), but if you are interested in learning more about how to make hanging feel like a position that is strong so that you can transition easily to something else, join me for the free just hanging masterclass and 14 day challenge. You know those masterclasses and those challenges where you walk away thinking the solution to getting better at a physical skill is to do more of it?

This isn’t one of those masterclasses or challenges. Learn how to integrate your hands all of the way down to your feet to make hanging feel more connected and more integrated.

Like a skill.

Oh, and it’s free.

Link to register is here:

I can't add a poll on here, but I would love to do an online livestream cohort for developing hanging and pulling strength. (All of this writing about pull-ups got me excited.) If this is something you might be interested, type yes below. (I am not going to DM you or anything. I am just trying to see if there is interest.)

"Jenn, that was f*&%ing amazing."

A client said this to me yesterday after a session. Based on what he said and what I saw, I knew he needed some focused spinal mapping. I also knew he wanted a good workout.

He got both. Which means his cranky left QL felt a whole lot better and he mentally felt better (because a good workout will do that to you).

I am building something that will allow you to create experiences that are f*&%ing amazing. Because those experiences are what make a different in people's flexibility, strength, and mental well-being.

The taster course begins October 3 with the feet. You don't need to attend live--you will have access to the recording for 6 months. Learn more here.

I thought this was a good read. I have watched the yoga pendulum shift--I began practicing yoga in my early 20s because I wanted the focus and body awareness. I also liked hand balances.

Yoga was never a complete physical practice for me. I saw it as a complement to running, hiking, and lifting weights. The last yoga class I went to in person (other than a restorative yoga class in Basel at The Looking Glass, which was exactly what I needed) included pistol squats that weren't programmed very well. I remember sitting in that class thinking to myself, "if I want calisthenics, I will do a calisthenics program that is designed for calisthenics." I wanted the yoga to be the yoga. I didn't want it to try and be everything else.

I have watched well known yoga teachers transition to becoming full time personal trainers. I get it. Even while I was exploring yoga personally, I never taught yoga to my clients and unless you are a well known yoga teacher who is packing classes in a city, the math doesn't work to make a full time living teaching in person. But strength training isn't a complete physical practice, either, which leaves room for something else, something that requires focus, gives you space to breathe, and allows you to move, without holding on to a heavy object.

Like all pendulums, at some point, there will be a shift away from such a mechanistic view of the body to the realization that there is space for a holistic approach to movement, strength, health, and well-being. And maybe instead of pitting different types of movement forms against each other, as though one is better than the other, the fitness and movement industry will focus on what they have in common--helping people move more and use their bodies in a way that makes them feel more connected.

Or maybe that's just my wishful thinking.

It used to be the peak symbol of wellness. Now many studios can barely stay open.
