🌟 Feature Friday Spotlight: Amanda Schreier, CNA 🌟

Amanda has been a Certified Nursing Assistant since 2017 and has proudly served with Amedisys Hospice for the past four years.

What she enjoys most about her role is building meaningful relationships with patients and their families, creating bonds built on trust, compassion, and support. Amanda believes these connections are one of the most rewarding aspects of her work.

Amanda was drawn to hospice care because of the opportunity to help patients remain comfortable and maintain their dignity through every stage of their journey. Whether it's assisting with personal care, styling a patient's hair, applying makeup, offering a listening ear, holding a hand, or supporting family members through a difficult time, Amanda finds purpose in helping patients feel like themselves and ensuring they are treated with the respect they deserve. She says taking the leap into hospice care was one of the best decisions she has made.

When she's away from work, Amanda enjoys all things Disney and Harry Potter. She loves spending time near the ocean or any body of water, reading, journaling, and enjoying the outdoors. Amanda's mom is her best friend, and she treasures time spent with her beloved fur baby, Minnie. Originally from Missouri, she also enjoys visiting family back home and proudly cheers on the Kansas City Chiefs. 🏰🐭❤️

On World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, we're highlighting the important role hospice and palliative care play in helping patients and families navigate serious illness.

Both hospice and palliative care focus on comfort, quality of life and support, helping patients receive care that aligns with their goals and wishes. Palliative care can begin at diagnosis and alongside treatment. Hospice care is typically chosen when treatment is no longer working or a patient decides to stop curative treatment for a terminal illness, shifting the focus to comfort, quality of life and support for both the patient and their loved ones.

🌟Feature Friday Spotlight: Angie Bettis, LPN🌟

This week's Feature Friday spotlight shines on Angie, a dedicated hospice nurse with more than two decades of nursing experience. Angie has been a Licensed Practical Nurse since 2003 and has built an impressive career caring for patients in a variety of healthcare settings.

For the past 16 years, Angie has been a valued member of the Amedisys Hospice team, where she works alongside an incredible group of coworkers who make every day meaningful.

Angie believes in treating every patient the way she would want her own loved ones to be treated. What she loves most about hospice nursing is the opportunity to provide physical comfort, emotional peace, and dignity to patients and their families during life's final chapter. She considers it a true privilege to offer simple but meaningful acts of care, whether it's brushing a patient's hair, holding their hand, or hearing the words, "I'm so glad it's you today." Those moments remind her why she chose this profession.

When she's not caring for patients, Angie enjoys long hikes with overnight camping adventures, relaxing at the beach, spending time with her favorite child, Kinz, and riding her new Harley-Davidson motorcycle. 🏍

🌟Feature Friday Spotlight: Beth, CNA 🌟

This week we are excited to spotlight Beth and her 80's hair!

Beth has been a CNA with Amedisys Hospice for the last 3 years.

We asked Beth what she loves most about her job and this is what she had to say: "Being a hospice CNA is more than just a job to me; it is a privilege. I love being able to care for people during such a vulnerable time. Every day I have to opportunity to bring comfort, kindness and dignity to my patients. What I love most about my job is the little things: holding a hand, sharing a smile, listening to stories or just being present when my patients need me. Those moments may seem small, but they mean so much. Hospice work has taught me to show down, appreciate the present and never underestimate the power of compassion. I'm proud to be a CNA and truly wouldn't want to do anything else."

In Beth's free time she enjoys shopping and cooking. She cooks for her coworkers, patients and friends and we all enjoy tasting the creations she comes up with. 🍛

🌿Topic Tuesday: The Little Blue Book We Give Our Hospice Families

When a loved one enters hospice, families often have questions about what to expect.
Why are they sleeping more?
Why aren't they eating or drinking as much?
Why has their breathing changed?
Why are they becoming more withdrawn or confused?
How will I know when the end is getting closer?

One resource we provide to our hospice families is Gone From My Sight: The Dying Experience by Barbara Karnes, RN.

This small book helps families understand some of the physical, emotional, and mental changes that may happen as a person approaches the end of life.
It discusses changes that may occur over months, weeks, days, hours, and minutes.
But there's something important we want families to remember: these are general guidelines, not a checklist. 💚

Every person is different. Not everyone will experience every change, and changes may happen in a different order or at a different pace.
The purpose isn't to predict exactly when someone will die.
It's to help families understand what they may be seeing, feel less frightened by unfamiliar changes, and know when to reach out to their hospice team with questions or concerns.

Sometimes, knowing what to expect can make an incredibly difficult journey feel a little less scary. And that's why we put this little book in your hands.
Hospice care is about caring for the patient AND preparing, educating, and supporting the family along the way.

🌟 Feature Friday Spotlight: Jonathan Danford, Hospice Liaison 🌟

Jonathan has been serving in hospice care for six months and is a valued member of the Amedisys team. Prior to joining hospice, he spent eight years working in senior living communities, building meaningful relationships and supporting residents and their families.

What Jonathan enjoys most about his role is helping patients receive the care they deserve. He is passionate about serving as a resource and source of support for both patients and their families during an important time in their lives.

Jonathan's journey into hospice care was inspired by a personal experience. After his father-in-law was placed on hospice services in December 2024, Jonathan witnessed firsthand the compassion, love, and support provided to his family. That experience confirmed his calling to hospice care and reinforced his desire to continue helping families even after the loss of a loved one.

Outside of work, Jonathan enjoys spending time with his wife and son, attending UGA football games, and firing up the grill for family and friends. 🍔

💤TOPIC TUESDAY: Why Do Hospice Patients Sleep More? 💤

One of the most common changes families notice as an illness progresses is that their loved one begins sleeping more. They may nap throughout the day, spend more time in bed, or become harder to wake.

This is a normal part of the body slowing down.

As the body becomes weaker, it uses less energy. Changes in circulation, metabolism, and how the organs function can also cause increased tiredness and sleepiness.

You may notice that your loved one:

💚 Sleeps for longer periods
💚 Takes more naps during the day
💚 Has less energy for conversation or activities
💚 Is awake for shorter periods of time
💚 May be difficult to wake at times

What can families do?

The most important thing is to allow your loved one to rest. You don't have to wake them just because they are sleeping.

When they are awake, offer comfort, gentle conversation, music, or simply your presence. Even when they aren't responding, talking to them and holding their hand can still be meaningful.

Our hospice team is here to help families understand these changes, answer questions, and make sure your loved one remains comfortable.

This week we're excited to spotlight Deidra Burns, RN Case Manager!

Deidra has been a nurse for 11 years and has dedicated the last 5 years to serving patients and families with Amedisys Hospice.

After working in the hospital setting, Deidra found her calling in hospice care. She shares that being able to provide emotional support and end-of-life education to patients and families during what can be a dark and frightening time gives her a true sense of purpose and meaning.

When she's not caring for patients, Deidra enjoys spending quality time with her family, getting lost in a good book, and making memories while cruising with her husband, Eric. 📖🚢

💚 Topic Tuesday: Hospice Is for the Family, Too

When someone you love is facing a serious illness, it can feel overwhelming. There are medications to manage, symptoms to watch for, decisions to make, and so many questions about what comes next.

You don't have to navigate it alone.

Hospice is a team approach, and every member of the team has an important role in supporting both the patient and the family.

👩‍⚕️ The Nurse
The nurse monitors the patient's condition, manages symptoms, provides education, coordinates care, and helps families understand what changes to expect. Nurses are also there to answer questions and help families feel more confident caring for their loved one.

🧼 The CNA
The CNA helps with personal care such as bathing, grooming, changing linens, and other daily needs. They also provide companionship and give caregivers an opportunity to step back and take a breath.

🙏 The Chaplain
The chaplain provides emotional and spiritual support based on the patient's and family's wishes. They are there to listen, provide comfort, help with questions or concerns about faith and spirituality, and support families through difficult moments.

💞The Social Worker
The social worker helps families navigate the emotional, practical, and sometimes financial challenges that can come with terminal illness. They can help connect families with community resources, assist with planning, provide counseling and support, and help families work through difficult decisions.

Together the hospice team provides something every family needs: support.

Hospice isn't just about keeping a patient comfortable. It's about making sure the family feels educated, heard, supported, and never alone.

Because sometimes the most important thing we can give a family is the reassurance that someone is walking beside them.
