“Why don’t they just leave?”
It’s a question survivors of domestic violence hear far too often. But leaving an abusive relationship isn’t always simple—and it doesn’t automatically mean someone is safe.
A survivor may be navigating threats or escalating violence, financial dependence, housing, children, pets, transportation, employment, isolation from family and friends, or fear about what an abusive partner may do if they try to leave.
There may also be love, hope, shared history, or a belief that things will change.
Every survivor’s circumstances are different. And every survivor deserves the dignity to make their own decisions about what safety looks like for them.
Instead of asking “Why don’t they leave?” we can ask:
💜 “How can I support you?”
Listen without judgment. Respect their choices. Believe what they tell you. And, when they’re ready, help connect them with an advocate who can provide confidential support, information, and safety planning.
Support survivors. Respect their choices. Equality Means Safety.
