"Can't I just take a cold shower?"

First problem: your shower probably isn't that cold. When we filled up our Chilly Dips in Florida, the water coming out of the hose was 80°. You can't control that, and you don't really know how cold it is.

Second problem: in a shower you're cooling one part of your body at a time and rotating, so you feel the discomfort over and over again.

Fully submerge to the base of your neck. That's where you've got a good deposit of brown fat, and that's the area you want to reach.

Lying down in a cold plunge puts most people straight into fight or flight. You feel helpless.

Sit upright and everything changes. You breathe better, and you're in control of your body and your mind. Cold is the enemy for a lot of people, and most of that battle is mental.

If you're adding cold therapy to your routine, look for two things: a vertical, seated plunge and control over the temperature.
