I always tell my clients we reduce inflammation to decrease pain via different modalities in order to buy time until more advanced treatment modalities become mainstream, evidence based with less invasiveness. There are several amazing option coming to clinicians with in about 3 years for the first novel treatment and then this WashU ortho appears to have something incredible as well! Come buy time with RRH, our goal is to reduce inflammation and reduce pain🎉🤠🤓can you imagine walking 11 miles in Paris and cancelling your knee replacement?
Farshid Guilak, PhD, is leading a WashU Medicine team advancing a promising new approach to osteoarthritis treatment – one designed to repair joint damage, not just manage pain.
With $17 million in new funding from ARPA-H, Dr. Guilak and co-lead Christine T. N. Pham, MD, are developing a single-injection “smart cell” therapy that responds to inflammation and mechanical stress in the joint, producing proteins that promote tissue repair when they’re needed.
The therapy demonstrated restoration of severely osteoarthritic joints to near-baseline condition, approaching 100% recovery.
The new funding will support additional preclinical testing and commercial development, bringing the therapy closer to human clinical trials. Clinical trials are not expected to begin for approximately 18 months – dates subject to change.
