I recently watched a video of a barber whose movements, cutting techniques and shaving skills were being recorded for research that could potentially help develop AI-powered barbering technology.
The comments were full of barbers calling him a sellout, accusing him of helping destroy the very profession he should be protecting.
And I couldn’t help but notice the irony.
Some of the loudest voices claiming to defend traditional barbering are part of an industry where too many barbers don’t even practice its fundamentals.
They don’t offer straight-razor shaves. They haven’t mastered their shears. They neglect traditional techniques, show up late, provide mediocre customer service and treat professionalism like it’s optional.
Yet suddenly they’re the guardians of barbering culture? 😂
You can’t demand that technology respect a craft you refuse to respect yourself.
Technology is advancing whether we like it or not. And while I believe there will always be tremendous value in the human connection between a barber and client, we shouldn’t take that relationship for granted.
If you want to preserve barbering, then PRESERVE IT.
Master your tools. Learn the traditional services. Respect your appointments. Deliver exceptional hospitality. Build genuine relationships. Give people an experience that technology cannot easily replicate.
Because the greatest defense of our profession isn’t complaining about innovation in somebody’s comment section.
It’s becoming the kind of barber whose value extends far beyond the haircut.
Adapt, elevate your standards and honor the craft you claim to love.
Otherwise, don’t be surprised when the industry evolves without you. 💈
