Marsha Nieland Move, Create, Meditate

There’s a moment on every women’s retreat when shoulders soften, laughter comes easier, and strangers begin to feel like friends. That’s why I love this work so much. 💙

I love creating space for women to step away from all they manage and make room for themselves—through yoga, rest, honest conversations, and a little adventure.

Watching women reconnect with their joy reminds me why I keep coming back, year after year.

Our next retreat is February 27–March 6, 2027, at Playa Viva, Mexico. Ocean breezes, beautiful sunsets, and time to simply be. I’d love to share it with you. 🌊

As I get older, I notice it more.

The stiffness.
The creaks.
The little reminders that my body needs attention.

At this point in my life, my practice is no longer negotiable.

It doesn’t have to be long.
It doesn’t have to be impressive.
Sometimes it happens in my bathrobe, looking out at the rain.

But I need to move.
I need to breathe.
I need to come back into my body.

It is one of the things that helps me feel human.

Midlife asks a lot of us.

Our bodies change.
Our hormones change.
Our energy changes.
Our priorities change.
Sometimes it feels like the terrain itself is shifting beneath our feet.

And that is exactly why I believe so deeply in having a few steady practices we can return to.

Movement.
Breath.
Meditation.
Time outside.
A quiet cup of tea.
Whatever helps you come home to yourself.

One of the things I love most about working with women in midlife is helping them create simple daily practices that support the body they have now and the life they are living now.

Not another thing to accomplish.

Something to lean on.

Because when so much is changing, it helps to have a few things that remind us:

Here I am.
This is my body.
This is my life.
And I know how to come back to myself. +

One of the most liberating things about midlife?

You do not need to have it all figured out.

This is one of the ideas we’ve been talking about in my women’s Middlessence gatherings — how much freedom there can be in letting go of the pressure to have a perfect plan for what comes next.

Middlessence is a season of change — our bodies, our roles, our relationships, our priorities, even the way we see ourselves.

And contrary to what midlife makeover culture might suggest, you do not have to burn your whole life down, move to Bali, start a podcast, or suddenly discover your ONE TRUE PURPOSE. 😉

Maybe the invitation is simply to get curious.

What are you drawn to?
What sounds fun?
What keeps tugging at you?
What have you been wanting to try just because it lights something up inside?

Curiosity lets us explore without demanding an answer.

You do not need to reinvent yourself overnight.

You just need to stay open to what is calling you now.

That is part of the beauty of Middlessence:
less pressure to have the answer…
and more permission to follow the next interesting thread.

Creativity keeps us flexible.
It keeps us curious

And maybe most importantly, it keeps us from believing that the way things are now is the only way they can be.

Machines can generate images, words, music, and ideas. But the human experience of creating is not only about the finished product. It’s about what happens inside of us while we create.

Curiosity. Risk. Frustration. Discovery. Surprise. Joy.

The courage to begin without knowing exactly where we’ll end up.

I was thinking about all of this today as I picked up the finish product. These commission pieces have been at the framer and will soon land on a wall in their new home.

I can feel something waking up in me.

As momentum builds around this new chapter—guiding women through midlife—I’m feeling an excitement I haven’t felt since I opened my first studio 26 years ago.

And yes, it’s a little scary. But mostly, it feels alive.

Lately, I’ve been hosting small circles of women in my home—listening, asking questions, and having the kinds of honest conversations we don’t always make room for. I’m trying to get my finger on the pulse of what women truly need in midlife.
I’m also hearing from women responding to my emails and sharing what they’re navigating—the changes, questions, uncertainty, hopes, and that very real sense of “What now?”

Every conversation fuels my fire.

I want to create something spectacular for women in this season of life. Spaces where we can come together, feel less alone, have honest conversations, laugh, learn, be inspired, and get excited about what might still be possible.

Maybe this is my own midlife awakening.

And I have a feeling I’m not the only one. ❤️

Midlife has a way of asking us a bigger question:
What do I want now?

Not what I should want. Not who I’ve always been. But what feels true in this season of life.

Maybe stepping into your power isn’t about becoming someone new.
Maybe it’s about finally giving yourself permission to become more fully you.

🔥This is the invitation of midlife.

One of the greatest gifts of midlife is giving ourselves permission to begin again.

To try something new.
To be a raw beginner.
To follow what lights us up—even if we have no idea what we’re doing yet.

I started painting when I turned 50 with absolutely no experience. Truly. None. I just felt drawn to it and decided to see what might happen.

What happened was joy.

Painting became a source of freedom, expression, curiosity, and a whole new part of me I hadn’t met yet.

I think this is one of the invitations of midlife: to stop believing we should already know who we are and start asking, “What else might be waiting for me?”

You do not have to be good at it.
You do not have to turn it into a business.
You do not need a five-year plan.

You just need a little curiosity and the willingness to begin.

Midlife isn’t only about letting go of what no longer fits. It can also be about discovering what makes us feel wonderfully, ridiculously alive.

What have you always wanted to try?
Maybe this is your season to begin.

Coming down the homestretch.
I have been working on these commissions for the past couple months and they are almost complete. Tomorrow will be varnished day and soon they will be living in the waiting room of a local business.

I explored using a different medium with this project that pushed me out of my comfort zone.
