What is Sleeping Dragon Kung Fu?
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from a lot of different teachers and explore different martial arts disciplines. Wing Chun, Kung Fu, Muay Thai, boxing, Tai Chi, Wushu and others. Some teachers were close to home. Others I’ve traveled across the country to learn from.
Every one of them taught me something different.
But somewhere along the way, I started to realize that I was learning more than techniques. I was figuring out what martial arts actually means to me.
For me, it’s the practice.
It’s getting up and doing the forms when nobody is watching. It’s working on a movement for the hundredth time because it still isn’t quite right. It’s learning to slow down, then learning when to move with speed. It’s strength, balance, control, patience and discipline.
And honestly, it’s also the peace that comes from doing all of that.
That’s where Sleeping Dragon Kung Fu comes from.
The dragon is always there. The ability, the strength, the fire. But it doesn’t need to be awake all the time.
Sleeping Dragon is my way of bringing together what I’ve learned from the different disciplines and teachers who have influenced my journey, while continuing to explore what martial arts can mean beyond simply learning techniques.
There will be forms, movement, conditioning, philosophy, history, lessons learned and plenty of experimentation along the way.
Mostly, though, it’s about the journey.
I’m still learning.
And I suspect I always will be.
