Before offering a solution, try asking:
“What kind of help would feel useful?”

Your young adult might want someone to listen, help breaking a task into steps, or a little time to think. Leave room for their answer, then agree on one next step together.

EAC offers parent support with practical strategies for everyday family life and growing independence.

Your young adult wants a job, but the applications still aren’t happening.

Before another reminder, try getting specific: What part feels unclear? Finding a role, working through the application, contacting an employer, or figuring out how to get there?

Our new blog shares practical ways to support those next steps without taking over.

Try a small independence practice this week.

Choose one everyday task, like packing a bag or starting laundry. Write down the first step, decide when you’ll try it, and put a reminder where you’ll see it.

Afterward, notice what helped and what needs adjusting. A useful routine should fit the person using it.

You can know what to do and still get stuck doing it.

The planner is filled out. The reminders are set. But getting started, handling a difficult conversation, or restarting after a rough week still feels hard.

That is where practical life skills support can help.

In our new EAC blog, we share four ways to build follow-through:
• Make the first action visible.
• Practice the words before you need them.
• Agree on what accountability will look like.
• Make a plan for restarting.

Chris Caro, EAC’s Director of Client Success and Life Skills Coach, helps teens and young adults work on routines, communication, and everyday responsibilities. His adult toolkits—ADHD Beyond the Planner and ND Recovery & Rebuilding—offer practical resources to use between conversations and coaching sessions.
