Last week, we took our annual group photo with the current Although we missed a few fellows who couldnโ€™t be there, it was a special moment to pause, reflect, and appreciate the incredible people who make this program what it is.

This year, I am especially grateful that we are able to continue the MNLEND program despite the many obstacles we encountered. With our federal grant approval coming much later than usual, we faced uncertainty and had to delay the programโ€™s start. Yet, here we are, continuing the work, learning together, and preparing the next generation of leaders in neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Every year, this moment captures more than faces; it captures the diversity, purpose, and passion that make MNLEND such a powerful community.
Our program brings together fellows from a wide range of professional backgrounds, including occupational therapy, physical therapy, nutrition, pediatrics, social work, psychology, community advocacy, disability self-advocacy, and family advocacy, among many others. Each fellow brings unique knowledge, professional expertise, lived experience, and a personal reason for being part of this journey.

As the MNLEND Program Coordinator, I feel privileged to get to know our fellows personally, their stories, their motivations, their aspirations, and the reasons they chose this program. Every interaction reminds me why this work matters.

Standing together for this photo reminded me once again of the heart of MNLEND:
It is inspiring to watch each fellow grow in confidence, discover their voice, strengthen their leadership skills, and deepen their commitment to disability justice. Their growth reinforces the importance of interdisciplinary learning and creating spaces where everyone's experiences, perspectives, and contributions are valued.

Despite the challenges, the work continues. And for that, I am grateful!

Last week, I had the opportunity to join Dr. Jen Hall-Lande, a member of our MNLEND (Minnesota Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities) leadership team, in attending the University of Minnesotaโ€™s LEAH (Leadership Education in Adolescent Health) Instituteโ€™s annual summer institute. This experience reinforced how critical adolescence is as a developmental period that shapes trajectories into adulthood, influencing long-term health, behavior, and overall well-being.

This yearโ€™s institute placed a strong focus on adolescentsโ€™ use of AI and social media, exploring how young people engage with these tools, what they gain from them, and how these platforms influence their identity, relationships, and mental health.
It was a valuable and enriching experience, highlighting that effectively supporting adolescent health requires meaningful collaboration across disciplines, bringing together diverse perspectives to better understand and respond to the evolving needs of young people.

Wrapping up the 2025โ€“2026 MNLEND cohort has been both rewarding and inspiring.

The last two weeks of April marked a meaningful close to this yearโ€™s journey. On April 30th, our fellows shared reflections on their experiences throughout the program, highlighting their growth, challenges, and the goals they are carrying forward into their careers. It was powerful to hear how each fellow plans to apply what theyโ€™ve learned to create impact in their communities and fields.

In addition, on April 23rd, fellows presented posters showcasing the projects they developed over the course of the program. These presentations reflected not only their hard work but also their commitment to advancing equity, improving systems of care, and supporting individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)/Developmental Disabilities (DD) and their families.

We had the opportunity to reconnect three weeks later to celebrate their accomplishments and present their certificates, an important moment to recognize their dedication and officially welcome them into the MNLEND alumni network.

Each year, it is truly a privilege to get to know our fellows, their passions, their career paths, and their vision for the future. Watching them grow professionally and seeing how they plan to carry this work forward is incredibly meaningful.
I also find myself learning so much from them and from our speakers each year. This experience has even inspired me to return to school to pursue another masterโ€™s in Social Work, so I can continue growing and contributing more deeply to the community.

As we say goodbye to this cohort, we are already preparing to welcome a new group of fellows in the coming months. The work continues, and so does the impact.

As our director, Amy Hewitt, always says: โ€œOnce an MNLEND fellow, always an MNLEND fellow.โ€

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) conversations are happening more than ever, but there are still common misconceptions that hold organizations back:

It includes lived experiences, abilities, perspectives, gender, culture, and more.
Representation is important, but without inclusive systems, people donโ€™t feel valued or heard.
Impact matters more than intent. We must be willing to listen, learn, and adjust.
It requires commitment at every level: leadership, teams, and organizational culture.
Conversations are a starting point, but real change requires action, accountability, and leadership.

DEIB is not a checkbox; itโ€™s ongoing, intentional work.
The question is: What actions are we taking today to move beyond awareness into impact?
