💻 Online Tutoring Nationwide Over time, I discovered my deep passion for teaching reading and writing. However, I realized that some students with learning disabilities, particularly those with dyslexia, were not receiving the support they needed to succeed. This led me to pursue a Master's degree in Education and advanced training to become a certified reading specialist and Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner, specializing in the Wilson Reading System. This evidence-based structured literacy program helps students with dyslexia improve their reading skills. I now teach privately, both in-person and online, providing specialized reading instruction to students of all ages. My goal is to offer intensive, personalized tutoring for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences, helping them gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed in school and beyond.

🌿 MYTH: Dyslexia will inevitably damage a child’s self-esteem.

Children with dyslexia may struggle with confidence in areas connected to reading and school, but that does not mean dyslexia has to define how they feel about themselves overall.

This distinction matters.

We want children to be able to say, “Reading is hard for me,” without allowing that struggle to become “I’m not smart” or “I can’t do anything.”

Understanding dyslexia, receiving appropriate reading intervention, experiencing genuine progress, and having supportive adults around them can all help children develop a healthier understanding of both their challenges and their strengths.

I explore the research behind this and practical ways parents can help in my article, “Supporting Your Child Emotionally When They Have Dyslexia.”

🌿 Parents need support too.

When your child is struggling to read, it can feel like there is suddenly so much you are expected to understand.

What kind of help does my child need?
Is the school intervention enough?
Should my child be evaluated?
What does all of this testing mean?
How can I help at home without adding more frustration?

You don't have to figure it all out by yourself.

One of the parts of my work that I value most is **walking alongside parents through their child's dyslexia journey**. I don't just work with the student. I help parents understand their child's reading difficulties, make sense of assessment results and progress, and think through appropriate next steps.

My goal is for parents to feel informed, supported, and better equipped to advocate for their child.

You know your child. My role is to bring my knowledge of dyslexia and reading intervention alongside what you already know about them. 🌿

Encouragement matters. But for a child who has struggled with reading again and again, hearing “You can do it!” may not be enough.

🌿 Children also need opportunities to discover that they really *can* do it.

That can happen when instruction meets them where they are, skills are taught explicitly and systematically, and they begin experiencing genuine progress for themselves.

A word they can finally decode. A passage that feels easier. A spelling pattern that suddenly makes sense.

Those successes can begin to change not only a child’s reading skills, but also the way they see themselves as a learner.

I talk more about the connection between progress, confidence, and emotional well-being in my article “Supporting Your Child Emotionally When They Have Dyslexia.”

When a child refuses to read, it can be easy to focus on the behavior we see.

But what might be happening underneath?

For a child who has struggled repeatedly with reading, avoidance may be connected to frustration, embarrassment, anxiety, or the expectation that they are going to fail again.

Instead of asking only, “Why won’t my child try?” consider asking, “What is making this so difficult for my child?”

🌿 Looking beneath the behavior can help us understand what kind of support a child really needs.

I explore this more in my article, “Supporting Your Child Emotionally When They Have Dyslexia.”

🌿 Supporting a child with dyslexia can be hard on parents too.

You may wonder if you’re doing enough, making the right decisions, or finding the right support for your child. You may wish you had recognized the signs sooner or knew exactly what to do next.

But your child doesn’t need you to have all the answers.

Keep learning. Keep listening. Keep noticing their strengths and their progress. And keep reminding them that the challenges they are experiencing today do not define what they are capable of tomorrow.

What is something you wish you had known earlier in your child’s reading journey?

🌿 Progress doesn’t always begin with a child believing in themselves.

For children who have struggled with reading for a long time, it can be difficult to imagine that things could ever be different. They may have experienced so much frustration that they no longer expect to succeed.

That’s where the adults around them matter.

We can notice the small steps forward. We can remind them of how far they’ve come. We can provide the right support and opportunities for genuine success.

And sometimes, we can hold onto hope for them until they are ready to believe it for themselves.

What is one small sign of progress you’ve seen in a struggling reader?

🌿 Blog Spotlight: Supporting Your Child Emotionally When They Have Dyslexia

Dyslexia can affect more than reading and spelling. For some children, repeated struggles with reading can begin to affect their confidence, motivation, and the way they see themselves as learners.

As parents, it can be difficult to know when to encourage a child to keep trying, when to look more closely at what is behind reading avoidance, and how to help without taking away every difficult experience.

In my latest Dyslexia Toolbox article, I explore the emotional side of dyslexia and share research-based ways parents can support their children while helping them experience genuine progress.

Because reading may be difficult today, but today’s struggle does not have to determine tomorrow’s possibilities. 🌿

Sometimes a child who avoids reading isn’t being lazy or defiant. Sometimes there is something deeper going on.

Over the years, I’ve worked with students who were afraid to read, convinced they weren’t good readers, or who had simply decided they “didn’t care.” When reading has been difficult for a long time, it can affect much more than academics.

In my latest blog post, **“Supporting Your Child Emotionally When They Have Dyslexia,”** I look at the emotional side of dyslexia and what parents can do to help.

A few of the topics I explore:

🌿 Looking beneath reading avoidance instead of assuming laziness or defiance

🌿 Understanding how dyslexia can affect academic confidence without defining a child’s overall self-worth

🌿 Helping children experience and recognize genuine progress

🌿 Knowing when to encourage perseverance and when to investigate significant distress

🌿 Recognizing when emotional support may be needed alongside reading intervention

🌿 Remembering that parents need support too

One of the things I hope parents take away from this article is that **today’s struggle does not have to determine tomorrow’s possibilities.**

Sometimes, until children can see the progress for themselves, they need us to keep believing that change is possible.

**Parents and educators, what has helped a struggling reader in your life begin to believe in themselves again?**
