Not everyone knows who to call when they or someone they care about needs help. And when you're already overwhelmed, trying to figure out where to turn can make things even harder.

Whether you're experiencing a mental health crisis, worried about someone you love, or struggling to meet basic needs, there are people and resources available to help.

You don't have to be suicidal to contact 988, and you don't have to be in an emergency to ask for help.

Today is World Mental Health Day, and I want to talk about something that doesn't get nearly enough attention. The relationship between our physical and mental health.

We tend to separate the two, but anyone who has lived with chronic pain, prolonged stress, or anxiety knows how much one can affect the other.

There's also a growing body of research supporting massage therapy as part of mental health care. Studies have found that massage can help reduce stress and symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improve overall well-being.

As a massage therapist, I think it's important that people understand massage has benefits beyond relieving sore muscles. Our nervous systems respond to touch, and the effects can extend well beyond the treatment room.

Massage therapy doesn't replace counseling, medication, or other mental health treatment. But it can be a valuable addition to the care someone is already receiving.

Mental health is health. And taking care of the body is part of that conversation.

For more information on the research, the American Massage Therapy Association has put together a great resource:

Happy International Coffee Day to everyone who drinks three cups of coffee and then tells me, “I just can’t seem to relax.”
No judgment. I get it.
Drink your coffee. Drink your water. Book your massage.
