Are your eyes open to the signs around you?

Sometimes we are so busy searching for answers that we miss what's right in front of us.

On the morning of October 2, I was walking along the beach when one of those signs stopped my walk abruptly.

A perfect cross, formed by sticks, lying right at the ocean edge.

It was exactly 12 hours earlier that I had received the devastating news of a friend’s passing.

In that moment, I didn't need an explanation. I needed comfort. And there it was.

As someone with deep faith, I believe God speaks to us in ways we don't always expect. But I also believe you don't have to share my faith to recognize the power of being present and paying attention.

Signs don't always come in the form of a cross on the beach. A simple and meaningful symbol of hope in my favorite place.

Sometimes those signs are:

* A conversation that gives you clarity about a difficult decision.
* A repeated pattern in your team that you can no longer ignore.
* A moment of connection in a relationship that reminds you what really matters.
* An unexpected sense of peace when everything around you feels uncertain.

In leadership, we can become so focused on driving results that we miss the signs telling us something needs to change.

In relationships, we can become so consumed with our own thoughts that we overlook what someone else is trying to communicate.

In life, we can become so determined to find the answers that we forget to simply be still enough to notice.

Not every sign is an answer. Sometimes it's an invitation to pay closer attention.

That cross didn't take away the sadness of my family, friends and losing Shane. But it gave me a moment of peace that I will never forget.

Call it faith, intuition, awareness, or simply being present, maybe we should all open our eyes a little wider today.

What if the clarity or comfort you're searching for is already right in front of you?

Every year on September 11, I feel it.

Living 20 minutes from the Pentagon, I can remember almost hour by hour where I was sitting that morning. What I was watching. What I was feeling.

At the time, I was working in the office of a private girls' boarding school.

As everything unfolded, we were given an important responsibility - “keep our emotions in check.”

We had young women around us who were scared and confused. We couldn't add to the chaos. We needed to be calm. Steady. Reassuring.

Meanwhile, my dad was on a plane that morning flying from Boston to Washington, D.C.

And for a period of time, we didn't know where he was.

I was scared. I was heartbroken. I was uncertain.

But I also felt like I couldn't fully express any of it.

And I remember how quickly the emotion underneath began to change.

Fear became anger.

Anger about what was happening.
Anger about the uncertainty.
Anger that I couldn't express what I was actually feeling in the environment I was in.

25 years later, I understand something about that morning that I couldn't have articulated then:

Emotions don't simply disappear because we ask them to. They often find another way to show up.

And that matters far beyond that day.

It matters in our marriages.
In our friendships.
In our families.
And especially in how we lead.

Fear can show up as control.
Hurt can show up as withdrawal.
Stress can show up as impatience.
Insecurity can show up as defensiveness.

And sometimes anger isn't anger at all.

It's the emotion we can see sitting on top of something much deeper.

This is why self-awareness is one of the most important responsibilities we have as leaders.

There are absolutely moments when leadership requires us to regulate our emotions. September 11, 2001 was one of those moments for me.

But regulating emotion isn't the same as ignoring it.

Mature leadership means being able to ask:
What am I really feeling underneath this? And how is it influencing the way I'm showing up with the people around me?

Today, I am reminded that we never fully know what another person is carrying underneath what we can see.

Maybe that's reason enough to listen a little longer, judge a little less quickly, and give each other a little more grace.

Remembering the lives lost, the families forever changed, the unity and the extraordinary courage and humanity we witnessed that day.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Today is the day!

Most entrepreneurs don’t need more hustle.

They need a team structure that no longer depends on them for every answer, every decision, and every fire.
Because eventually even the highest-capacity leaders hit the wall of being the bottleneck.

Today, May 26th (11:00 am PT / 2:00 pm ET), Chad Willardson is hosting a free 90-minute live Zoom training where he’ll break down the frameworks he uses to grow multiple companies without becoming the ceiling himself.

I have been blessed to be a part of the ELEVATED team for over the past 2 years and have experienced this first hand.

This is not another surface-level conversation.

It’s about building a business that can scale with clarity, accountability, leadership, and trust. One where your team can think, execute, solve problems, and move the mission forward without everything flowing back through you.

If you’ve ever felt like:
• Your business cannot function without you
• Your team waits on direction too often
• You’re carrying too much mentally
• Growth is creating more pressure instead of more freedom

This 90 minutes should already be on your calendar!

You will walk away with:
• Why delegation keeps most founders stuck and what to do instead
• The shift from owner-led to vision-driven, team-delivered
• The “Fully Invested gap” and why your team is the fastest way to close it
• A practical team assessment you can apply immediately after the webinar
• Clear frameworks to help your business scale without sacrificing your health, family, or peace of mind

See you there! Registration link in comments.

Strong businesses are built on systems. Strong families are built on presence. The goal should never be choosing one over the other.

90 minutes you need to make space for on your calendar!!!

Quick question: If you took a 2-week family vacation and turned your phone off, would your business keep thriving? What about 4 weeks? Or 8 weeks? Most founders I talk to flinch a little when I ask that. I get it. Feels uncomfortable even picturing that. That discomfort you felt (maybe even the feel...

Are you missing this?

Not everyone is wired to follow the same rules - even when the rules are clear.

The other day, I was up in Boone, NC walking the town and crossing the street with a friend.

Early morning. No traffic. Maybe two or three cars in the distance. Wide open road. I stepped off the curb and started walking.

She stopped. Walked over and pushed the button for the cross walk.
She was waiting for the signal, as I was already half way across the intersection.

Same situation. Completely different response…
