Exciting news! We’re thrilled to welcome our 3rd provider, Kara Ross Cook FNP-BC, to the Temple team! Some of you likely already know Kara, and we’re SO excited to have her join us. You’ll begin seeing Kara at Temple starting next week!

Kara will help us bring expanded services, greater availability, and additional capabilities across all areas of our practice. Her addition is another important step in our continued growth and commitment to providing our community greater access to the comprehensive, personalized healthcare Temple has become known for!

And with that growth, we have another important announcement:

We are accepting NEW primary care patients again!

As some of you know, we made the difficult decision to temporarily stop accepting new primary care patients as our schedules reached capacity. Adding to our provider team has allowed us to begin opening that availability back up while continuing to prioritize the time and attention our patients deserve. This booking availability is now reflected for easy online bookings @ www.mytemple.care

At Temple, primary care is not separate from everything else we do.. it’s a key part of the whole picture, and a core reason why we maintain agreements with all major insurance carriers.

Whether a patient is incorporating medical weight management or hormone therapy into their care — or neither — we KNOW good medicine means addressing the whole person.

We also know “band-aid” quick 10-minute medicine when a patient needs to be heard is not the way. You will never find that kind of pressure placed on our providers or your care!

As countless Temple patients already know, we dig deep — and we spend the time necessary to do it. That can mean comprehensive lab work, metabolic health and counseling, hormone evaluation, medication management, preventative care, chronic disease management and more — because sometimes getting to the root of what’s going on requires looking beyond the obvious and spending more than 5–10 minutes with a patient.

Botox isn’t just for beauty at Temple (but we do that too! 😉). Learn from Kasie Barrett, FNP-BC, a Master Injector specifically certified & trained in therapeutic Botox for TMJ-related symptoms, as she breaks down an often misunderstood cause of jaw and facial pain, and why simply “injecting the masseters” isn’t always the answer. If you clench or grind your teeth, wake up with a sore or tight jaw, experience recurring temple headaches, or constantly carry tension through your jaw, neck and shoulders, the problem may involve more than the temporomandibular joint itself.

The masseter is one of the strongest muscles involved in chewing and clenching. When it is constantly working overtime, it can become enlarged, tight, tender and painful. But it isn’t the only muscle that can contribute. The temporalis, upper trapezius and surrounding myofascial structures may all play a role in a patient’s individual pain pattern.

That’s why at Temple, therapeutic Botox starts with a medical assessment, not simply an injection!

Botox temporarily decreases the nerve signals telling a targeted muscle to contract. In the appropriate patient, carefully placed Botox can decrease excessive muscular activity and may help reduce clenching, tension and muscle tenderness, while maintaining the normal function you need to chew, speak and move your jaw.

And there is no universal “TMJ Botox” dose or injection pattern.

Anatomy matters. Muscle size matters. Placement matters. Dose and depth matter. Most importantly, understanding the source of the pain matters!

Kasie brings more than 20 years of experience as a nurse practitioner, including deep experience in pain management and procedural pain management, to each evaluation. Her approach considers the entire picture: the jaw, temples, neck, shoulders, trigger points, clenching and grinding habits, and headache patterns, not simply where an injection can be placed.

For some patients, Botox may be the primary treatment. Others may benefit from addressing surrounding trigger points and myofascial tension as well.

And sometimes the evaluation indicates that the problem needs the expertise of a dentist, oral surgeon, physical therapist or another specialist instead. Because Botox can help address muscular activity, but it doesn’t repair a damaged joint, correct a bite or treat every cause of jaw pain!

The goal at Temple will never be to Botox everybody. It’s to identify the right patient, understand the problem, and develop the right treatment plan.
