Planning your Halloween costume?

Think twice before making decorative contacts part of the look.

Even when they don’t correct your vision, decorative lenses sit directly on the surface of your eye. Poorly fitting lenses or improper wear can lead to irritation, corneal scratches or infection.

That’s why your eye doctor may recommend leaving decorative contacts out of the costume altogether.
You can change your look in plenty of ways without taking chances with your eyes.

This Halloween, let the costume make the statement, not the contacts.

Two people can have the same eye condition and still have very different treatment plans.

Your eye doctor may consider factors such as how advanced the condition is, how it’s changing over time, your overall health, other eye conditions and how your vision is affecting your daily life.

Sometimes the right next step is treatment. Sometimes it’s continued monitoring. And the approach may change over time.

That’s why eye care isn’t simply about naming a condition. It’s about getting to know you, understanding how your vision affects your life and working together to find the care that’s right for you. We’re here to listen, answer your questions and support you every step of the way.

Weekend project? Yard work? A little time in the garage?

Before you get started, think about your eyes.

Protective eyewear can help reduce the risk of eye injuries from flying debris, dust, chemicals and other hazards. The right protection depends on what you’re doing, so make eye safety part of the plan, not an afterthought.

Why would your ophthalmologist ask about a medication prescribed for something completely unrelated to your eyes?

Because some medications can affect your vision and eye health.

Certain medications can cause changes in vision, increase eye pressure, contribute to dry eyes or raise the risk of developing certain eye conditions. These effects can vary depending on the medication, dosage and length of use.

That’s why sharing your complete medication history with your ophthalmologist is an important part of protecting your eye health.

Have questions about how your medications might affect your eyes? Talk with your eye doctor about potential side effects.

Never stop or change a prescribed medication without first consulting the clinician who prescribed it.

When you hear “eye inflammation,” you may picture an eye that looks red or irritated.

But inflammation can also develop inside the eye.

Conditions such as uveitis can affect different structures within the eye and may cause symptoms including blurry vision, light sensitivity, eye pain or new floaters.

During Inflammatory Eye Disease Awareness Week, we’re highlighting why changes in how your eyes feel or see can matter, even when the problem isn’t obvious from the outside.

If you notice a new or significant change in your vision or eye comfort, talk with your eye doctor.

Sometimes changes in vision are easy to notice. Other times, they show up in the little things.

Maybe street signs aren’t quite as crisp. Small print takes a little more effort. Colors seem different. Or you’re reaching for your glasses more often than you used to.

Pay attention to those details. Even subtle changes are worth mentioning to your eye doctor so your care team has a complete picture of how you’re seeing day to day.

Cataract surgery may be a major milestone in your vision care, but it isn’t the end of the relationship with your eye doctor.

Your eye doctor will let you know what follow-up care is recommended after surgery and when you should return. And over time, continuing to stay connected with your eye care team gives you an opportunity to discuss any changes you notice in your vision.

Your eyes continue to deserve attention after cataract surgery, too.

Between work, texts, streaming and everything in between, your eyes can spend a lot of the day focused on something up close.

One simple way to give them a break: look away from your screen regularly and focus on something farther away. Remembering to blink can help, too.

If tired, dry or uncomfortable eyes are becoming a regular part of your day, talk with your eye doctor. You don’t have to simply accept eye discomfort as part of using screens.

It's a surprisingly specific question for an important reason.

Changes in central vision, including straight lines appearing wavy or distorted, can be symptoms of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other retinal conditions. AMD affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for the detailed, straight-ahead vision we rely on for things like reading and recognizing faces.

Early AMD may not cause noticeable symptoms at all, which is another reason regular dilated eye exams matter.

And if you do notice a new change in the way lines, objects or faces appear, tell your eye doctor. Sometimes the smallest visual change can provide an important clue about what's happening at the back of the eye.
