November is ! It’s a time to honor and celebrate the unique histories, culture, and contributions of Native communities across the US.

At MACA, we recognize the importance of strengthening maternal health and well-being in Native communities — and addressing the health disparities that result in higher rates of maternal and infant mortality.

Part of the problem is that Native people are often undercounted or misclassified in health data. So we’re glad to see that our friends at Child Trends have released a new brief that focuses on achieving a better understanding of data sources, gaps, and opportunities in Native maternal health.

You can find it here: https://www.childtrends.org/publications/understanding-data-sources-gaps-opportunities-native-maternal-health

Calling all crafty types! 🧶 Autumn is the perfect season for knitting and sewing projects as scarf and sweater weather arrives. And this time of year, MACA moms and their babies can especially use soft, cuddly blankets and quilts as well as warm mittens, caps, and scarves for winter!

If you knit, crochet, quilt, or sew and you'd like to donate something for MACA moms, please get in touch with us via email at [email protected]!

Pictured are a few of our favorite donations: some beautiful blankets "handmade with love" for MACA moms by AIDS Foundation Chicago staffer Sacha Urban.

Contest Update: LeSherri James (our board vice president) has now survived multiple rounds of elimination in the “Top Host” podcast contest and is currently #3 in her group! But she could use your votes to help her keep moving up.

If LeSherri wins the Ryan Seacrest Foundation’s contest, her new podcast would be produced by iHeartRadio — plus she’d be a guest on Ryan’s show and win $25K.

LeSherri says her show would focus on “real conversations about faith, motherhood, HIV, mental health, and resilience.”

Please vote for LeSherri, and help us spread the word! You can vote for free once per day, and every vote helps. ❤️

We keep finding pics we love from this year’s AIDS Run & Walk Chicago! It was such a glorious day. 🌞 Getting together with others to create positive change continues to be one of the best ways to shake off anxiety and feel better about the world.

Our team is currently at 67% of our goal for this year, but there’s still time to help us reach it! Your donations can provide everything from basic baby supplies like diapers and formula, to life-changing programs that help moms stay healthy and move forward with their lives.

Here’s a sobering and unacceptable fact: nearly one in four women living with HIV experiences physical violence or harm after sharing their HIV status with a partner or others.

October 23 is a Day of Action to End Violence Against Women Living with HIV. At MACA, we’re adding our voices to those of Positive Women's Network - USA, The Well Project - HIV and women, and many others to lift up this issue and share resources for education and action.

This annual observance was created in 2014 after two women were murdered by their partners because of their HIV status.

Rather than mourn in silence, Venita Ray and Morénike Giwa Onaiw, PhD, joined Positive Women’s Network in raising awareness about the violence that women living with HIV experience and debunking the narrative that their outcomes must always be violent.

For more information about the Day of Action and what needs to be done to end the violence, please visit: https://www.poz.com/blog/ending-violence-women-hiv-political-will

Additionally, The Well Project has rounded up a list of resources on the Intersection of Women, HIV, and Violence:
https://www.thewellproject.org/hiv-information/resources-intersection-women-hiv-and-violence

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, please call The National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (800-799-7233) or text the word "BEGIN" to 88788.

The Chicago Foundation for Women (CFW) held its 41st annual luncheon on October 20, with the theme “Health, Power & Possibility.” Members of MACA’s team were honored to attend, including our president Anne Statton and our case management supervisor Dr. Erie Crawford (pictured left to right).

One very compelling part of the program was a presentation about the legacy of Henrietta Lacks, the African American cancer patient who helped save countless lives as the source of the first immortalized human cell line.

Two of Henrietta Lacks’s granddaughters spoke, describing what it was like to grow up in their family and how their grandmother’s story had a powerful impact on their lives, despite the fact that they never met her.

Henrietta Lacks’s story is meaningful not only because her cells enabled medical breakthroughs, but because it raised important issues about consent, privacy, and patients’ rights given that her cells were used for research (including for commercial purposes) without her awareness or consent.

It took decades before Henrietta Lacks was properly recognized and honored for her contribution, and her family had to spend years seeking justice for the violation of not just Henrietta’s privacy but their own, since family medical records had been published without their knowledge or permission.

Thanks to Chicago Foundation for Women for putting together this memorable program, in addition to the incredible work that the organization does on behalf of women and girls every single day of the year — including CFW’s ongoing support of Mother and Child Alliance’s work.

The Rosehill Cemetery Crypt 5K is always a high-spirited nighttime adventure! This past weekend MACA’s president Anne Statton once again participated in the Halloween season’s most spooktacular race, joined by her sisters Amy and Laurie, brother-in-law Bill, and friend Jo.

Described as a uniquely spine-tingling experience, the Crypt 5K is held annually on the grounds of Chicago's historic Rosehill Cemetery — with the entire course illuminated by candlelight, casting eerie glows on the statues and mausoleums. It’s a guaranteed scream!

October is Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness about how to ensure for babies. This year we’re helping to amplify a basic but important message: “Give them room to breathe.”

Our friends at Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Illinois Department of Children and Family Services teamed up with Safe Kids Illinois to share these three simple steps to help keep sleeping infants safe.

This Thursday, October 15, is National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day! 2026 is all about empowering Hispanic/Latine people to get tested for HIV, whether at home or a local testing center. This year’s theme is “Knowing your HIV status is a good place to start,” with community-led HIV testing events across the country to turn awareness into action.

Tips & links to check your status, via nlaad.org:

• Choose a free at-home self-test for privacy and convenience.
• Or visit a testing center for personal support from healthcare professionals.
