That bulge behind her knee? 55 cc of fluid.
This is a Baker cyst, a fluid-filled sac behind the knee that forms when the joint overproduces fluid, often from arthritis or a meniscus tear. Her left knee is shown for comparison.
Under ultrasound guidance, we placed a needle directly into the cyst and drained 55 cc of straw-colored fluid. In-office, no incision.
Right after: full knee bend, minimal to no pain.
Draining relieves the pressure. Treating the cause is what keeps it from coming back, and that’s the next step in her plan.
