Despite the robust body of evidence supporting pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) as a safe and effective intervention for individuals affected by COPD, only a fraction of the country’s COPD patients are eligible for Medicare.

According to Mosher et al, the primary culprits behind this trend are disparities, barriers and inequities in access, along with inadequate reimbursement for services. View the five strategies he and his co-authors recommend to help boost participation in PR while potentially saving Medicare a fortune in the process in the latest from News & Views:

By News & Views Staff Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacts a significant burden on the U.S. healthcare system, in terms of dollars spent and lives lost. A 2023 report suggests the key to tackling both is readily available — but largely untapped. Writing in the Annals of the American...

When you think of creative arts therapy, what demographic comes to mind? Psychiatric patients? Sick children? People battling cancer? What about cardiac rehab (CR) participants?

Learn how Chyela Rowe and her arts therapies and wellbeing program team are helping adult patients — including those enrolled in CR — grapple with their diagnoses, and how you can register to hear Chyela speak at our March 21 webinar, in this News & Views feature:

By Denise Williams | News & Views When she was having a bad day, young Chyela always felt better after strapping on her roller skates and whirling around the family garage, the soundtrack from “Xanadu” blaring in the background. The joy in the movement and the power of the music just did somethi...

Learn more about Richard's story and how got him back up on his surfboard in this feature from News & Views:

One topic rarely discussed in pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is the delivery of PR to patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The septic nature of this disease adds concerns for the patients as well as for the PR professionals treating them, which historically has created challenges in the delivery of care.

CF management, however, has dramatically changed for the better in the past several decades with enhanced infection control protocols, an emphasis on patient education and the growing availability of tele-rehabilitation. Learn more on how these changes have better equipped PR programs to service this patient population in the latest from News & Views:

Dave Dreibelbis considered himself an active man before his diagnosis led him to a pulmonary rehabilitation program at the Phoenixville Hospital in Pennsylvania. He was a baseball player until age 19 and a fast-pitch softball and basketball player until his mid-30s and early 40s. He also often walked up to two miles a day before he discovered golf, falling in love with the game nearly 25 years ago. But in April 2021, all of that changed.
