NANS was formed in 1994 through the efforts of a group of neuromodulators dedicated to patient care and to advance the science and application of neuromodulation to benefit patients. The North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS) links patients, physicians and health care professionals, scientists, engineers, and industry to advance neuromodulation, drive multidisciplinary collaboration, enhance therapy awareness and inspire innovation to transform patients’ lives.

Where the evidence ends, the conversation begins.

At NANS 2027, experts from across the field will examine the gray areas of neuromodulation—challenging assumptions, weighing differing perspectives, and tackling questions without one clear answer.

Join conversations on evidence and bias, PNS, AI and large language models, multimodal neuromodulation, and more.

NANS is advocating for greater access to peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) for patients living with chronic pain.

In comments submitted to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, NANS urged recognition of PNS as a medically necessary treatment option for appropriately selected patients.

Today’s PNS therapies include multiple FDA-cleared platforms backed by a growing body of clinical evidence. As a non-opioid treatment option, PNS can offer patients another pathway for managing chronic pain and, for some, potentially reduce reliance on long-term medications or more invasive procedures.

📣 NANS has published a new evidence-based clinical practice guideline on peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) for chronic pain.

Because PNS is not a single intervention with a uniform evidence base, the guideline takes an indication-specific approach—evaluating evidence by pain condition, anatomic region, neural target, stimulation mechanism, and temporary vs. permanent systems.

Grade A support for PNS includes:
• Hemiplegic shoulder pain
• Lower-extremity post-amputation pain
• Persistent spinal pain syndrome type I (PSPS-T1)

For PSPS-T1, the guideline further distinguishes between sensory stimulation of the lumbar medial branch nerves for non-surgical axial low-back pain and bilateral L2 medial branch motor stimulation in patients with documented multifidus dysfunction.

NANS is advocating for Medicare payment policies that protect patient access, support physician practices, and encourage continued innovation in neuromodulation and pain management.

In response to the proposed 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, NANS raised concerns about declining physician payment, changes to practice expense methodology, Modifier 25 payment reductions, and revisions to remote monitoring reimbursement.

NANS urged CMS to consider the specialty-level impact of these changes and ensure Medicare policies support sustainable practices and access to high-quality, innovative care.
