National Headache Foundation Our story: We support headache & migraine awareness, deliver education, fund research, and inspire advocacy. Non-profit Headaches.org

For over 50 years, our mission at the National Headache Foundation has been to further awareness of migraine and headache disorders as legitimate neurobiological diseases. Much has changed during this time, and with the aid of advanced technology and clinical innovation, there are more treatment options than ever before. However, we understand that these diseases are still largely misunderstood and that finding the right treatment options for you requires nuanced and adaptable insight.

This Black History Month, we honor a legacy of hope and healing within Black and African American communities. Join us in raising awareness about headache and migraine.

🔹 Only 46% of Black patients living with headache seek care from healthcare providers.
🔹 Just 14% of Black headache patients receive prescriptions for acute migraine medications.

You and your loved ones deserve access to effective treatment. Ask your provider about FDA-approved drug and non-drug options for acute and preventive headache and migraine care.

There is strength in seeking help—You Are Not Alone. The National Headache Foundation is here for you.

On January 20, 2025, we celebrate 30 years of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as a National Day of Service. This day not only honors Dr. King’s commitment to justice and equality but also calls on us to take action to better our communities.

In the spirit of service, we must acknowledge and address disparities in healthcare. For people living with headache and migraine, racial inequities are stark. For example:

▪️ Only 47% of Black patients with headache have a formal diagnosis, compared to 70% of white patients.
▪️Black men receive the least care for headache diseases nationwide.
▪️Only 14% of Black headache patients receive acute migraine prescriptions, compared to 37% of white patients.

Dr. King’s legacy reminds us that progress is possible when we work together. Let’s honor his vision by advocating for equitable healthcare and supporting those who need it most.

This MLK Day, let’s not only reflect but also take action: volunteer, raise awareness, or empower someone with information that could change their life. Together, we can create a brighter, more inclusive future.

🎉 Kicking off 2025 strong with an incredible weekend at with ! NHF's FIRST time attending, and we'll definitely be returning next year.

🏔️ The Broadmoor provided breathtaking views, but the true highlight was meeting the inspiring Student Veterans who joined from all corners of the country—Alaska 🐻‍❄️ to Florida 🐊 and Maine 🦞 to Hawaii 🌺.

NHF was honored to lead a standing room only workshop focused on service-related headache and migraine. It was a highly interactive sharing of realities by all attendees, resulting in powerful wisdom and advice that allowed each veteran and service member leave with meaningful next steps to getting the care needed and deserved. Everyone's dedication to supporting fellow members of the military community is unmatched. 💪✨

And back at our exhibit table, we were continuing these meaningful discussions as so many are willing to share stories of navigating life with headache and migraine. Together, we will amplify awareness, end stigma, and work toward solutions that make a difference.

A special thank you to Kristy Stevens 🙌 for inviting us to this experience and for fostering such a welcoming community at .

Did you know? Headache doesn't just impact adults, they also affect children. Between the ages of 5 and 17, 20% are prone to headache. 🧠

This can be difficult to navigate as both a parent and caregiver—especially with supporting your child, advocating during doctor's visits, receiving school accommodations, and sustaining a household with other children.

Did you know that what you eat might influence how often you get a migraine attack? An anti-inflammatory diet, which includes fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and omega-3 rich foods like salmon, may help reduce inflammation in the body and lower the frequency or severity of migraine attacks.

Avoiding processed foods, added sugars, and red meat can also make a difference. Small dietary changes can be a powerful tool in managing your migraine health.

Taking care of yourself includes the choices on your plate!

Our Story

Founded in 1970, the National Headache Foundation is the oldest and largest foundation for patients with migraine disease and headache disorders. The Foundation is the premier educational and informational resource for those with headache, health care providers, and the public. The work of the Foundation is through education, raising awareness, advocacy, and research. At the national and state levels, we are informing policymakers and the general public of the need to help patients get access to safe and appropriate care. We are reaching out to employers throughout the US to provide education for their staff and support in their efforts to minimize the costs and the personal/social impact of chronic headaches. We also hope to educate and encourage the 40 million Americans with migraine and chronic headaches to become self-advocates with their healthcare practitioners, insurers, employers, and families.
