Community helps individuals with disabilities break the barriers of isolation. It’s a space where they can form genuine connections and share experiences, making life more vibrant and inclusive.

Richard Jacobs shed light on how communities provide a safe space to express frustrations, challenges, and victories on "Everything You Know About Disability Is Wrong" last week. This acceptance fosters a sense of belonging and reduces the mental health risks associated with feeling misunderstood or alone.

Did you know that 8 out of 10 people with a disability are not in the labor force, compared to just 3 out of 10 without a disability?

At HB Threads, we aim to change that. For many of our associates, HB Threads is their first job—a truly transformative experience. For some, it serves as a springboard into the broader workforce, while for others, it becomes a fulfilling career. That’s why our associates feel more like family than coworkers.

Meet Tyrel Jones. Tyrel has been a part of the HB Threads family for twelve years and is a proud graduate of the Easterseals Academy. His favorite things about working here include spending time with friends who make him laugh, earning a paycheck, and creating custom buttons for his favorite team, the Chicago White Sox.

Tyrel loves making buttons, pressing shirts, folding sweatshirts, bagging products for shipping, and working with the embroidery machine. His dedication and enthusiasm embody the mission of HB Threads.

This winter, if you’re in need of warm-weather gear, shop at hbthreads.org. Every purchase supports meaningful employment opportunities and transforms lives.

Today's is about stepping out of our comfort zones! A person we support loves going to the movies, but has struggled in the past being comfortable speaking to the employees at the theater. Before, she'd have her Easterseals' team do most, if not all, of the talking with the workers and found navigating the movie pass on her phone frustrating.
But with time, encouragement, and practice, she has gained more and more confidence in herself in this setting! Now, she knows to prepare the movie pass before entering the building, so she doesn't feel rushed or get flustered when moving through line. She is now also starting conversations with the workers, not just needed conversation, but even chatting about the movies she has seen! And her staff says it's amazing to see them come to love her quirky personality!
Now, she doesn't need her team members when navigating the movies, and she beams with pride with her new accomplishments!
