A simple check for your jaw, neck and shoulders.
When your neck feels stiff turning to one side, it's natural to think the neck is the whole story. Your eyes and jaw may be part of it too.
The connection
The joint between your top two neck vertebrae, C1 and C2, provides about half of your head's turning range. The small muscles beneath your skull help your brain track where your head is, and they work closely with your eyes. Jaw activity can also influence how your neck muscles respond.
For some people, neck stiffness also accompanies headaches. But that doesn't mean every headache starts in the neck.
When turning your head feels limited, you may notice your shoulders joining the movement, especially when checking your blind spot.
What happens between sessions
In our sessions, I look at how your jaw, eyes, head, neck and breathing coordinate. Hands-on neuromuscular therapy is part of that work, along with movement practices specific to what we observe.
The home practices we talk about give you ways to build on that work between visits.
Easing tension is part of the picture. How your body coordinates everyday movement matters too.
What you can do
1. While seated, slowly turn your head left and right. Notice whether one direction feels easier.
2. Return to center, close your eyes, and move them gently left and right without turning your head.
3. Notice whether your jaw tightens, your tongue moves, or you hold your breath.
4. If I've shown you how to use a jaw trainer, repeat the eye movement with it as instructed. Otherwise, keep your teeth gently apart and your tongue resting lightly on the roof of your mouth.
5. Open your eyes and turn your head again. Does anything feel different?
There's no need to force anything. Stop if you feel discomfort or dizziness.
Each small check like this can build your awareness, and over time that awareness may help your progress carry into your workday and your rest.
Here's a short video showing the connection:
If you notice something different when you try this, keep it in mind for our next session.
Before I go, a quick update about appointments.
A simpler session menu
I've simplified my session menu by removing Muscle Therapy NMT and TMJ Therapy as separate options. The work they covered is already included in your sessions, so nothing changes in the care you receive.
Tuesday in-studio sessions in Clarendon Hills can now be booked online →. for both new and returning clients. Wicker Park appointments continue as usual.
If you've noticed these patterns yourself, we can explore them together at your next session. And if it's been a while since we've worked together, I'd be happy to see you again.
Warmly,
Mara Nicandro, BCTMB, NMT
