What actually happens to the brain during a concussion?

Many people think a concussion is simply a bruise on the brain, but it's more complicated than that. A sudden impact or movement can cause the brain to shift inside the skull, triggering changes in brain cells, chemical activity and energy levels.

Dr. Jeremy Shapiro explains why a concussion is classified as a mild traumatic brain injury — and what that really means.

It’s , and today we have a heartfelt thank you for Maryssa's Mission Foundation and the Rivas family!

To celebrate 10 years of MMFKids, Maryssa’s Mission Foundation partnered with our Family Resource Center and the FRESH Study to support families facing food insecurity. Their generosity is helping provide grocery vouchers to families who have children with complex medical needs, giving them access to food when their focus needs to be on caring for their child. Maryssa’s Mission Foundation has a longstanding commitment to medically fragile families, including support for food-insecure patients and the creation of Maryssa’s Family Lounge in Cincinnati Children’s CICU.

Something as simple as having groceries covered can make a meaningful difference during a hospital stay. It is one less worry and one more way families know their community is behind them.

Thank you to Maryssa's Mission Foundation, Mitch Rivas, Mindy Rivas, Mary Ellen Shramek, Mary Brownfield and Tracey Light for continuing Maryssa’s legacy and showing up for Cincinnati Children’s families in such a meaningful way!

🤧 Fever? Sore throat? Pink eye? Before you pack up the kids and head out the door, watch this. 👀

Watch as we explain when Virtual Urgent Care can get you the help you need from home, and when an in-person visit is the better choice.

We encourage you to check with your primary care provider first, even after hours, if they are not available our 24/7 Virtual Urgent Care may be the right option.

Hamilton County Children's Services has a levy on the November ballot, Issue #10, that would renew and increase funding for children's services. Consistent with our mission and advocacy priorities, Cincinnati Children's has endorsed the levy and made a corporate contribution to the campaign supporting the measure.

Why voting matters in healthcare:

The American Medical Association has formally recognized voting as a social determinant of health. There is good evidence that improved health outcomes are tied to voting.

People from communities with increased voting report better health, fewer risky health behaviors, and have less chronic disease, hospitalization and mortality.
