Have you noticed protein is being added to everything lately? Protein coffee, cereal, chips, cookies, shakes... the list keeps growing.

I absolutely believe protein is important and make an effort to get enough every day. But I also think we need to remember that a food having 20 grams of protein doesn't automatically make it healthy.

For me, it comes back to balance. I try to get most of my protein from real foods like meat, eggs, lentils, chickpeas and dairy, and then use protein shakes, bars or other higher-protein snacks as fill-ins when I need something quick.

I don't think processed protein foods are bad, but I also don't think they should replace the nutrition we get from whole foods.

I wrote a little more about this, what the research says about protein, and what getting enough protein actually looks like in my own day.

You can read it here:

Have you noticed lately that protein is being added to EVERYTHING? Protein coffee, protein cereal, protein chips, protein cookies, protein shakes — if there is a food, someone has probably figured out how to make a “high protein” version of it. I’m not against protein. Actually, I think prot...

About 16 years ago, I was struggling with gut issues and chronic pain. I wasn’t finding many answers from doctors beyond medications that helped manage the symptoms, but I wanted to understand what might be happening at the root of the problem.

So, naturally, I started researching. (one of my fav past times)

That’s when I came across **Dead Doctors Don’t Lie** by Dr. Joel Wallach. This book completely changed the way I thought about food, nutrition, medicine, and health.

One of my biggest takeaways was the importance of -micronutrients—the vitamins, minerals, and trace elements our bodies need in relatively small amounts but that play incredibly important roles in how our bodies function.

It also made me start questioning the way we sometimes talk about food and health. Instead of simply asking, *“Is this food good or bad?” I started asking: What nutrients does it contain? How has it been processed? What has been removed? What does my body actually need?

If you’re interested in the connection between food, nutrients, and health, "Dead Doctors Don’t Lie" is an interesting listen. — it may make you start asking some different questions about your health and the food you eat.

You can find the audio on YouTube, and the book is also available on Audible.

Sometimes one book doesn’t give you all the answers—it simply changes the questions you start asking. And for me, this was one of those books.

We had a little bake‑off in the kitchen last night…
One traditional banana bread vs. one made with the 41 Grains Banana Bread Mix (yep — the gluten‑free chickpea one).

The verdict? They didn’t rise the same, but the taste test left us torn. Both were delicious in totally different ways.

If you’re banana‑bread‑curious, grab a bag of the 41 Grains mix at Gallatin General Store and try the experiment yourself. Your taste buds get to be the judge.

I listened to a podcast recently that really put into words something I've felt for years.

When we started our manure spreading business back in 2013, I loved building it. A few years later, when it was time to sell, I realized something about myself. While selling was the right decision at the time, it also taught me that the next business I built wouldn't be something I hoped to flip one day—it would be something I wanted to grow for the rest of my life.

That's exactly what 41 Grains has become.

The podcast with Alex reminded me that there is a difference between building a business to sell and building a business to steward. Neither is wrong, but I realized I've never been driven by the idea of creating something just to cash out. My heart has always been in building one business with deep roots that can continue to grow, serve, and hopefully last for generations.

41 Grains started incredibly small, but it has never been a "let's see if this works" business. From the beginning, it has been built with the long view in mind. Every decision we make is measured against the foundation we want this company to stand on.

Those foundations are simple:

1. Family and community are at the core of everything we do.

2. Integrity comes before profit. People and quality will always matter more than making another dollar.

3. Health and nutrition are a priority—not only for our family, but for everyone we serve. We want to keep learning, teaching, and creating food that truly nourishes people.

4. Keep it simple. The world has made food unnecessarily complicated. We want to create simple solutions, simple ingredients, and restore simple trust in both food and the people who produce it.

This podcast was incredibly encouraging because it reminded me that growth isn't just about getting bigger. It's about building something strong enough to last.

It reminded me that building a business isn't just about growing bigger or making more money. For me, it's about building something that will still matter years from now—something my family can be proud of and something that continues to serve people well.

I don't know what the future holds for 41 Grains, but I do know that every decision we make is with the long term in mind. That's why I enjoyed this podcast so much.

I'd love to hear what you took away from it if you give it a listen.
