Researcher Q&A: Growing Cells for Glaucoma (30 second clip)
Our National Glaucoma Research awardee Jason Meyer, PhD, is a pioneer in the effort to regenerate eye tissue that is damaged by glaucoma and proof that not all heroes wear capes.
Tissue regeneration is something the eye cannot do on its own and uncovering how to make this happen will help solve one of the greatest challenges ever attempted in vision science—replacing lost sight.

A Thank You Message from Grantee Ian Pitha, MD, PhD
Ian Pitha MD, PhD of Johns Hopkins Medicine received a grant from National Glaucoma Research, a BrightFocus Foundation program. The goal of his project is to learn more about the processes that control eye remodeling in glaucoma in order to discover new glaucoma treatments. Dr. Pitha and colleagues will map how the architecture of cells in the sclera change in the early and late stages of glaucoma. They hypothesize that increased eye pressure will disrupt cellular architecture.
They will also screen for compounds that restore normal cellular function and protect the nerve from pressure damage. Thank you to our donors for making this research possible.
Make A Plan Today & Get Your Eyes Checked
The best way to combat eye disease is a comprehensive, dilated eye exam to help prevent vision loss, slow its progression, and better manage any damage that may have occurred.
That is why, for Macular Degeneration Awareness Month, we are sharing these public service announcements that feature powerful first-person accounts about the impact of vision loss and the importance of eye health.

A Thank You From Glaucoma Scientist, Dr. Karen Curtin
A team of researchers including BrightFocus National Glaucoma Research grantee, Karen Curtin, PhD, developed The Utah Project on Exfoliation Syndrome (UPEXS) to investigate associations between exfoliation syndrome (XFS) and various systemic diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, inguinal hernias, pelvic organ prolapse, obstructive sleep apnea and atrial fibrillation.
Further validation of UPEXS will improve our understanding of XFS, its clinical phenotype and associated comorbid diseases leading to more accurate diagnosis, management, and improvement in earlier identification of diseases associated with XFS and better help identify common risk factors, environmental factors and demographics thus ultimately impacting patients’ outcomes.
