The first class of physician assistants (PAs) graduated from Duke University on October 6, 1967. National PA Week begins on that date every year.

More than 50 years later, PAs are part of care teams in nearly every specialty and across multiple practice settings. They examine patients, diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications, and guide patients through treatment.

Thank you to the PAs practicing throughout Upstate New York for the positive impact you make in your communities. And the Caring Gene® Program is proud to support our PA students as they continue to work toward earning their degree.

Happy National PA Week to all of you!

The Caring Gene® Program removed financial barriers to education for thousands of participants throughout rural and upstate New York while simultaneously connecting those participants to organizations that serve Medicaid, uninsured, and underserved populations.

After more than two years, local communities are starting to see the impact. Take a look at the full story in our annual report: https://hubs.la/Q04z9bN60.

Sometimes the most difficult part of a long shift is the part you carry home with you. Here are a few tips to create a real transition between your work time and your personal time:

✅ Build in a buffer, even if that's an extra five minutes in the car before you head inside.
✅ Remind yourself that you did your best all day long, and that's enough.
✅ Change out of your scrubs or uniform as soon as you can. The physical shift helps the mental one.
✅ Develop a small ritual that tells your body the day is done, whether that's listening to music, chatting on the phone, or just sitting still for a few moments.

The goal isn't to forget the day. It's to make space for real rest so you're ready to tackle the next one.

If you're a behavioral or mental health provider in a rural part of New York State, you already know how hard it is to hire the people you need. A recent report from the NYS Comptroller found that a number of rural counties are federally designated as mental health shortage areas, with less than half the providers per capita as the rest of the state.

The CPT Program is helping to bridge that gap. All participants pursuing behavioral and mental health titles commit to three years of service at an approved site, including:

🔹 Cortland County Mental Health Department
🔹 Elmira Psychiatric Center
🔹 Hillside Children's Center - Finger Lakes Campus
🔹 The REACH Project
🔹 St. Peter's Addiction Recovery Center (SPARC)

If your organization provides behavioral or mental health services, especially in rural or underserved areas, we'd love to connect. Please visit https://hubs.la/Q04xYgjS0 to join our roster of approved employers.

Addiction rarely affects one person, and the same can be said for recovery.

A Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) works with the person in recovery and the family trying to heal alongside them. It's also one of the more accessible roles in the healthcare field.

For CASACs, each day is different, and may include:

❇️ One-on-one sessions focused on recovery goals.
❇️ Group meetings focused on coping skills and relapse prevention.
❇️ Connecting clients and families to other community resources.
❇️ Following up to track progress and adjust care plans.

CASACs offer steady, ongoing support for patients and families working through some of the hardest moments of their lives.

Visit https://hubs.la/Q04xtp3_0 to see if becoming a CASAC may be the right move for you.

You clock in on time, and spend the day on auto-pilot checking items off your to-do list. At home, you snap at your partner or your child over a small inconvenience, and then immediately apologize while wondering where that frustration came from. Later on, you watch the clock move, minute by minute, unable to get comfortable and already dreading your alarm.

We all have bad days, but when the work that once gave you purpose starts to feel like something you have to survive, you may be experiencing burnout.

Learn the signs of burnout and how to address it in our latest blog: https://hubs.la/Q04xmwbG0.

Together, on a cloudless September morning, we watched the world change.

Join us today, 25 years later, in remembering not the tragedies, but the triumphs: the unrelenting courage of the first responders, the resilience of a battered city, the enduring power of hope.

Our thoughts are with the victims, and the families who never stop missing them; with the first responders who lost friends and colleagues; with the survivors who carry with them the best and worst parts of this day.

Today, and always, we remember.

All CPT Program participants have their own "why," but the best part about a career in care is that those individual "whys" ripple through entire communities.

This is the kind of work that changes many lives. We're proud to be a small part of it.
