Community living is a civil right, not a courtesy.
For more than 25 years, the Supreme Court’s Olmstead decision has said that people with disabilities have the right to live in their communities rather than being pushed into institutions. That principle comes from the ADA’s integration mandate.
This month, the federal government changed its legal position on that mandate. A court approved the change in Texas v. Kennedy, and national disability organizations have condemned it.
At Progressive Community Network, our position hasn’t changed. People with disabilities belong in our neighborhoods, workplaces, and schools, with the supports to live the lives they choose.
What you can do:
• Call or write your members of Congress and ask them to protect the ADA’s integration mandate.
• Share this post so more people understand what’s at stake.
• Tell us in the comments why community living matters to you or your family.
