Tomorrow, plenty of inboxes will fill up with mental health reminders. The bigger question is what your employees can turn to on October 11th.

World Mental Health Day is a valuable moment to open the conversation. Awareness matters, and it works best when paired with support people have access to all year and a culture where using that support feels normal.

In practice, that can look like:

◾️ Managers who know how to respond when someone says they're struggling
◾️ Workload conversations that happen before burnout sets in
◾️ Consistent support such as health coaching, alongside your Employee Assistance Program and clinical care

Coaching helps employees build daily habits around stress, sleep, and recovery. It complements therapy and EAP services rather than replacing them, and it gives people a place to keep working on their wellbeing long after the awareness posts fade.

Here is why you, as a coach, will win over AI.

Imagine for a second you're at a Paris train station and want to see the Eiffel Tower. You ask AI for guidance and it maps your route in seconds.

Then you smell fresh croissants and tell it to take you to the nearest bakery instead. It happily reroutes you. Before long, you're nowhere near the Eiffel Tower.

AI follows your lead, wherever that goes. A coach holds their client accountable to where they said they wanted to go.

That's one of seven things I've learned using AI inside my own coaching practice. They're all in a short guide: Where AI Falls Short, and Why Coaching Still Wins. It also gives you the words for the moment a client asks, "Why would I pay for a coach when AI is free?"

I created it for the Future of Health Coaching Virtual Retreat. If you weren't able to join us, I still want you to have it.

This one is for you if you lie in bed exhausted and still can't switch off.

It was a normal day. Nothing dramatic happened. Yet your shoulders are up by your ears, you snapped at someone over the dishwasher, and your stomach is unsettled after lunch again.

Sound familiar? When stress goes on for a long time, your body can stay on high alert even after the reason for it has passed. Here is how that can show up:

◾️ Sleep that leaves you tired anyway
◾️ A shorter fuse than usual
◾️ Bloating or an unsettled stomach with no clear cause

Most of us push through and adjust, until being wired starts to feel like just who we are. It doesn't have to stay that way. Bodies can learn to settle again, and next Monday we'll give you a few things to try.

How does stress show up for you? Tell us in the comments.

Before next year's numbers get locked in, one simple question is worth asking: which parts of this year's wellness offering did people use?

Budget conversations often start with last year's line items and a percentage adjustment. Wellness programs tend to get carried forward as they are, or trimmed without much discussion.

A short review now gives you much better footing. Look at participation by program, where people dropped off, what employees said in feedback, and which requests came up but never got addressed.

Those gaps show you where the most useful investment sits for next year.

What did your team ask for this year that your current program doesn't offer?

Picture this. You knock on someone's door to borrow one tool to hang a picture. Instead of handing you one, they dump an entire shed of tools at your feet. Now you're standing there with fifty options and no idea which one you need.

That's often what it feels like when a client shows up having already built a plan with AI. Lots of information, no filter for what applies to them.

A good coach does the opposite of the shed example. Instead of handing over solutions, we ask what the client wants to achieve. We explore what's gotten in the way before. We ask what a typical work week looks like for them. Then we work out the next best step together.

AI can hand someone a plan in seconds, and that's remarkable. Making sure that plan survives contact with someone's actual week is a different question altogether, and that's coaching work.

I want to share something personal.

I was packing for a trip to London with my daughter. Watching her lay out one adorable outfit after another, I went to my own closet ready to do the same. Then I stopped. I couldn't pack for cute. I had to pack for layers, something to peel off the second a hot flash hit, something to add back when the chill came right after.

It wasn't really about the clothes. It was catching myself mid-decision, realizing midlife had quietly changed the question from what looks good to what can I survive the day in.

If you've had that same moment standing in front of your closet, you know exactly what I mean.

Temperature swings like this are usually tied to hormonal shifts, and while you can't pack your way out of them, there's work you can do around sleep, nutrition, and the hormonal piece itself that helps.

If you want support with that, find a coach here: https://www.virtualhealthcoaches.com/find-a-coach.html

Your company rolled out an AI wellness assistant. Employees like it, usage numbers look good, and it's answering questions around the clock. Six months in, though, the actual health metrics you were hoping to move haven't budged much.

Here's a piece that doesn't show up in the vendor demo. AI, as it's built right now, is largely designed to agree with whoever's talking to it. Push back on it, question it, and it tends to concede rather than challenge you back. Left alone with that, people don't get redirected. They get quietly confirmed in whatever direction they were already headed, whether or not it's the right one.

That's not a flaw you fix with a better chatbot. It's a structural gap that coaching fills. A coach isn't there to hand over the answer someone wants. A coach checks in, asks the harder question, and notices when someone's plan needs to change before they say a word about it.

AI can absolutely support a wellness strategy. It shouldn't be the whole strategy.

If you catch yourself asking a client WHY they didn't follow through, try this: close your eyes and picture someone asking you that same question. Most of us picture getting defensive, shutting down, already building an excuse before the sentence is even finished.

“WHY” questions put people on trial.

“WHAT” and “HOW” questions open door to a deeper conversation.

Swap why didn't you make a healthy lunch for how did that morning unfold, or how were you feeling by the time lunch came around. Same topic, completely different response. One puts a client on the spot. The other invites them to actually reflect.

This is a small shift, but it changes what a session sounds like. Clients stop justifying themselves and start noticing patterns instead, which is usually where the real work begins.

If you want more coaching language shifts like this one, come talk it through with other coaches in our free community.

I want to feel better. It's one of the most common things a client says in a first session, and also one of the hardest to actually act on. Feel better how? Doing what? By when?

A coach we work with tells the story of a client who kept circling that same phrase. They kept digging. What does that mean to you? I want to feel better. But what does that look like, in your real life? Eventually the coach asked for one ordinary moment that would feel different once she'd gotten there. The client said, if I can put my garbage out at the curb in a sports bra and leggings without a second thought, I'll have gotten there.

That's not a vague wellness goal. It is deeply personal and specific.

September is Healthy Aging Month, and it's worth asking yourself the same question. Not what does healthy aging mean in general, but what does it look like for you, in one ordinary moment you'd notice.

If you're ready to find that moment and build toward it, find a coach here: https://www.virtualhealthcoaches.com/find-a-coach.html

More employees on your health plan are likely using GLP-1 medications than you'd guess from casual conversations. Most won't mention it at work. But it's already affecting energy levels, eating patterns, and how people show up during the day, whether anyone's talking about it or not.

These medications can genuinely help. They also come with a piece that often gets missed in benefits conversations: appetite suppression doesn't automatically mean someone is eating well. Employees can lose weight while under eating or missing key nutrients, which affects energy, focus, and long term health, the exact things a workplace wellness program is supposed to support.

This is where coaching fills a gap. Not to second guess a medical decision, but to help someone build eating habits that hold up alongside the medication, not in spite of it.

A workplace wellness strategy that only offers step trackers and health plan coverage is missing this piece entirely.
