Could Poor Circulation Be Slowing Healing?

When blood flow is limited, the body may have a harder time delivering the oxygen and nutrients needed for tissue repair.

That’s why a wound that repeatedly stalls or fails to improve may need more than wound care alone.

Third River Health can evaluate for underlying vascular conditions such as Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and provide advanced treatment options when appropriate.

Sometimes helping a wound heal starts with understanding what’s happening with circulation.

A Different Approach to Wound Care

Sometimes a wound needs more than traditional wound care.

Third River Health now offers UltraMIST®, a non-contact ultrasound therapy that delivers low-frequency ultrasound through a gentle saline mist to support wound cleansing, maintenance debridement, and healing.

It’s another tool our wound care team can incorporate into an individualized treatment plan for appropriate patients with chronic and difficult-to-heal wounds.

Meet Dr. Amit Sharma

Sometimes the reason a wound isn’t healing is below the surface.

Amit K. Sharma, MD, is a board-certified Interventional Radiologist specializing in minimally invasive, image-guided procedures. At Third River Health, his expertise in conditions such as Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) helps the team evaluate and address circulation problems that may contribute to chronic and non-healing wounds.

Dr. Sharma is a Houston native, Rice University graduate, and graduate of the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine. He completed fellowship training in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the University of Miami.

When a Diabetic Foot Wound Won’t Heal

For people with diabetes, even a small foot wound deserves attention. Reduced circulation and other complications can make healing more difficult and allow a seemingly minor wound to become a much larger problem.

Third River Health provides advanced evaluation and treatment for diabetic foot ulcers and other difficult-to-heal wounds, with multiple treatment options available under one roof.

Early evaluation can make a difference. If a wound isn’t progressing as expected, it may be time to take a closer look.

Meet Dr. Paul Goen

With more than two decades of medical experience, Paul S. Goen, MD, FACEP, CWSP, brings a unique combination of emergency medicine, healthcare leadership, and advanced wound care experience to Third River Health.

Dr. Goen’s connection to wound care actually began before medical school, when he spent eight years working in the field.

Today, he brings that experience full circle through physician-led, individualized care for patients facing complex healing challenges.

He also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University, helping educate the next generation of physicians.

More Tools for Wound Healing

A wound that won’t heal doesn’t always have one simple cause, which means there isn’t always one simple solution.

At Third River Health, we have multiple tools in our wound healing toolkit, including advanced wound care, vascular evaluation and treatment, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), UltraMIST®, diagnostic ultrasound, and lymphedema therapy.

Having these services working together allows our team to look beyond the wound itself and develop a treatment plan around what may be preventing healing.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Healing After Radiation

For some cancer survivors, the effects of radiation treatment can appear months or even years after treatment is complete. Radiation can damage healthy tissue and reduce its ability to heal.

For qualifying patients with delayed radiation injuries, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) may be part of the treatment plan, delivering oxygen under pressure to support the body’s natural healing processes.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re reminding patients and providers that cancer treatment may be over, but help may still be available for some of its lasting effects.

Sometimes the reason a wound won't heal isn't the wound itself.

Poor circulation. Infection. Diabetes. Chronic swelling. Insufficient oxygen delivery.

At Third River Health, we have built a continuum of advanced services to help identify and address the different factors that can stand in the way of healing.

Our services include advanced wound care, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, PAD/PVD evaluation and treatment, diagnostic ultrasound, lymphedema therapy, and now UltraMIST non-contact ultrasound wound therapy.

One team. Multiple treatment options. One goal: helping patients heal.

For some wounds, standard treatment isn't enough.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy delivers 100% oxygen in a pressurized environment, increasing the amount of oxygen available to the body's tissues.

For qualifying conditions, HBOT can be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan to support the body's healing process.

At Third River Health, HBOT is medically supervised and coordinated with the other care a patient may need.

Swelling can be more than uncomfortable. It can also interfere with healing and quality of life.

Third River Health provides specialized lymphedema care, including Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy, to help patients manage chronic swelling and its effects.

Our lymphedema services can also be coordinated with other medical services at Third River when a patient has multiple factors affecting recovery.

Comprehensive healing starts with understanding the whole picture.
