A cover-up should look like a new tattoo, not a tattoo hiding another one.

This old script was replaced with a rich red peony, using deeper values and strong contrast to completely change the shape and visual weight of the original piece.

Cover-ups are always a puzzle, and that’s half the fun.

I got to work on this one a few months back, and it was such a cool family piece.

The Harley-Davidson is based on the actual motorcycle her grandfather owns. I was able to track down a photo of his bike, use that as the reference, and rebuild it into a black-and-gray tattoo design. We added the daffodils to represent her grandmother and tie the whole piece together.

I really enjoy tattoos like this because every part of the design means something. It’s not just a motorcycle and flowers—it’s a piece of her family history.

And since I had the Meta glasses with me that day, I was able to capture some of the process from my point of view too.

Dom’s client walked in with an idea: a tattoo inspired by Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken. She wanted an untrodden path with a darker, more ominous atmosphere—something quiet, uncertain, and still waiting to be explored.

This is how most of my cover-ups begin

The client brings us the problem. We photograph the existing tattoo, do a doodle, create an accurate tracing, and flatten the area digitally. This allows us to design and scale the stencil precisely—even when the tattoo needs to wrap around a curved part of the body.

The theme of this Tattoo was family, God, country specifically in that order. So we added some family ties and a little head nod to his time in service and made the whole theme religious. Couple that with opaque black and gray style and this tattoo feels like it glows when you see it. Still looking to do some more hunting sleeves still looking to do some more abstract work hit me up if you’re interested.

He said he didn’t mind the dagger but he hated the way the script aged. He asked if I could help. I feel like I did. Cover ups have to be done intentionally. You have to use part of what’s there. When you get it right the old stuff just disappears..
