Conversations matter. What we do after them matters, too. Sexual violence isn't only an issue when a case makes national headlines. Survivors are part of every community, including ours.

If you're asking what you can do, there are tangible ways to support survivors right here in our community. Awareness is important. Action is what carries it forward.

For immigrant survivors, navigating an abusive relationship can come with challenges that aren't always visible to others. Uncertainty about legal rights, access to resources, and unfamiliar systems can create additional barriers to seeking support. Recognizing these challenges helps us better understand why leaving an abusive relationship isn't always as simple as it may seem.

Behind every service TESSA provides are dedicated individuals who understand that when someone reaches out for help, having someone ready to answer can change everything. On Thursday, October 15, we brought some of those faces together to recognize the collective commitment that makes this work possible.

To our fellow advocates, community partners, and everyone wearing purple in solidarity, thank you for standing with survivors and helping build a community where no one has to navigate violence alone.

Every Survivor Matters.

A room full of young people ready to make their voices heard! On October 8, TESSA had the opportunity to attend Douglas County's Youth Congress at the Colorado State Capitol, where students gathered alongside community leaders to discuss issues affecting young people and their communities. From conversations in the House chamber to smaller group discussions, the day created space for students to share their perspectives, engage with important issues, and experience civic participation firsthand. We're grateful to the Douglas County Youth Initiative for bringing together the next generation of leaders and giving them a platform to be heard. It's exciting to see so many young people engaged in shaping the future of their communities!

Abuse can exploit the parts of someone's identity that connect them to their family, culture, community, or sense of self. A person causing harm may also exploit fears of discrimination to convince a survivor that seeking help will make things worse or that no one will believe them. Every survivor deserves to be heard and supported.

A huge thank you to COSILoveYou for showing up ready to tackle some BIG projects at TESSA! Their volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help with sandbox repairs, window and stairwell cleaning, furniture assembly, and other hands-on projects around our space. These are the kinds of projects that can be difficult to tackle during the day-to-day, and having a team willing to jump in and get them done makes such a difference. Thank you, COSILoveYou, for giving your time and energy to care for the spaces that serve our clients, families, and staff!

A huge thank you to the incredible volunteers from Microchip Technology Inc. for spending time with TESSA! Their team jumped in to help us organize and inventory supplies for Holiday Shoppe, tackle post-event organization after Pasta in the Park, and prepare materials for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. From getting us ready to support families this holiday season to helping us prepare for October, their hard work made a big difference behind the scenes. Thank you, Microchip, for showing up for TESSA and the survivors and families we serve!

Technology can make our lives easier, but the same tools can be misused to extend control far beyond someone's physical location. Phones, vehicles, accounts, cameras, smart-home devices, social media, and even children's devices can be used to monitor or harass a survivor. Technology-facilitated abuse is abuse.

Financial abuse can create barriers that continue long after a relationship ends. Someone may technically have a job and still have no access to their earnings. They may discover debt they didn't create, have damaged credit, or face housing instability because of financial decisions made without their knowledge. Money can become another tool of power and control.

When people hear “physical abuse,” hitting or punching may be the first behaviors that come to mind. But physical control can take many forms. Recognizing abuse means looking beyond whether someone has a visible injury.
