What does longevity look like in the body?

It's not just about how long we live. It's also about maintaining the strength, mobility, stability, balance, and functional capacity that allow us to keep participating in the life we want.

Here are four of my longevity metricsβ€”simple movement practices that can be used to explore those capacities:

β†’ Hip Abduction
β†’ Posterior Chain Push-Up, with beginner through advanced variations
β†’ Sumo Squat with Flexion
β†’ Single-Leg Romanian Deadlift

This is a short demonstration rather than a workout. The idea is to observe what the body can doβ€”and how that capacity changes over time.

This excerpt is from my Applied Abhyanga Technique video series, a collection of study companion videos created to accompany my book, Ayurvedic Massage: Abhyanga for Chronic Pain and Other Conditions. The full-length video series is available to book purchasers.

A little more attention to functional capacity now can be part of how we support the body for the long game. 🌿

In Ayurveda, timing is everything.

This is an excerpt from the Applied Abhyanga Technique video series, a collection of study companion videos created to accompany my book, Ayurvedic Massage: Abhyanga for Chronic Pain and Other Conditions. The full-length video series is available to book purchasers.

In this clip, I introduce the 1:1 rhythm in Abhyangaβ€”the stroke and return are performed with equal duration, creating an even, steady cadence.

Rhythm and tempo are not simply about creating a pleasant massage experience. In Ayurvedic bodywork, they're part of how we work with qualities and doshic considerations.

A small change in rhythm can change the quality of the work.

In my practice, I use a variety of toolsβ€”from silicone cups and massage balls to bamboo dowels, stainless-steel instruments, and tuning forks.

The point isn't simply having more tools in your treatment room. It's understanding when, why, and how a tool can support your therapeutic work.

Traditional knowledge can be adapted thoughtfully to contemporary clinical practice without losing the principles that give it meaning.

This is Ayurveda for the modern body.

There is a reason the teacher-student relationship is so deeply revered in the Vedic traditions.

Traditionally, learning wasn't about collecting information from slides, downloading another course, or checking a box.

It was about relationship.

Observation.
Practice.
Questions.
Conversation.
And, over time, the development of discernment.

Before my first trip to India in 2009, I was given some very specific advice:

**Come to your lessons with questions.**

If I didn't have any questions, I should be prepared to be dismissed.

That stayed with me.

Because the deeper we go into Ayurveda, the more we realize that knowing *about* something isn't the same as knowing how to practice it.

And some things simply cannot be learned from a screen.

This is one of the reasons I offer private preceptorships through Rasayana.

My preceptorships are designed for practitioners and serious students who are ready to move beyond simply accumulating information and begin developing their **clinical judgment, hands-on skills, professional identity, and capacity to apply what they've learned.**

The work is individualized because **you** are not a generic practitioner.

If you're considering private preceptorship and want to explore whether we're a good fit, I've created a Preceptorship Interest & Intake Form as the first step.

**Come with your questions.**

I'll bring mine, too.

πŸ’† Massage appears in Egyptian records. In Hippocrates' treatise On Joints (5th century BCE). In Charaka's classical Ayurvedic texts (ca. 600 BCE). Across virtually every indigenous culture on earth.

Before pharmaceuticals. Before surgery. Before any system we call modern medicine, there were skilled hands.

As a manual therapist, you are not a service provider who happened to choose massage. You are the contemporary expression of a healing practice as old as human culture.

That's a meaningful place to stand. Clinically. Ethically. And in how you talk about your work.

RasaLab starts here: with the lineage. Because the techniques only land when you understand what you're actually part of.

This is one of the concepts I've been writing about for years and now I'm finally putting it in a format you can actually use.

🌿 Ayurveda doesn't just describe what to do. It describes how healing works β€” and it turns out there are three distinct pathways.

Most manual therapists are brilliant at one of them and don't even realize the other two are available to them.

This graphic is a preview from RasaLab, the clinical companion and membership community I'm building alongside my book, Abhyanga for Chronic Pain (Singing Dragon, November 2026).

🧑 RasaLab and the full clinical breakdown β€” Sanskrit, methods, and exactly how each one shows up in your treatment room β€” is inside the free Rasayana app. in November. πŸ“²

Before I became a professional Ayurvedic bodyworker, the first several years of my personal Ayurveda practice was only my AM abhyanga routine.

A simple, 4 oz. blue glass bottle with a pump that I warmed up in a coffee cup and hot water from my tea kettle. Now 20 years later, that set up looks like a copper dish set over an open tea candle flame.

It was (and remains) the single, most powerful practice for me to keep my stamina and strength. It keeps my sanity too. πŸ˜†
