HabitGarden, LLC RN turned holistic health coach | Mindful habits to feel better & heal yourself 🌿

Hey friends đŸ„°

I am sure you have noticed I’ve been quiet on here. I’ve been navigating some significant health issues recently and have been in and out of the hospital.

HabitGarden was created from a place of wanting to share how we can better nurture and care for ourselves. Right now, I’m honoring that by turning that care inward.

At this time, I’m choosing to keep the details of my health journey private, but I truly appreciate all prayers, love, and well wishes đŸ–€

In the meantime I hope you can continue taking good care of yourselves, and nurture microhabits that turn into lifelong sustainable healthy lifestyle choices impacting generations to come đŸ„°

Much love,
Danielle

The power of “YET”

Last week I went ice fishing. 🎣

I don’t know the first thing about ice fishing.

I just know I enjoy being outside, I had gone over a decade ago and enjoyed it, and had the opportunity to go again. So, I went.

The first fish I caught I fumbled and almost lost, and was scared to touch the fish. 🙃💅

Eventually I took initiative to pick up the fish and tried getting the hook out by myself.

I was still struggling with the hooks by the time we stopped ice fishing.đŸȘ

This experience reminded me of the power of “YET”.

I am not good at taking the fish off the hook, yet.

I haven’t set up my own lure, yet.

I don’t really know what I’m doing, yet.

I learned during that fishing trip that there’s a lot for me to learn.

And it’s okay to be a beginner at something.

The power of “YET” is a gentle reminder that it’s okay to not know everything.

It’s okay to be bad at something at first.

It’s okay to make mistakes and be imperfect.

So next time you feel like you are bad at something, remember the power of “YET”.

You aren’t good at whatever your new at
.yet.

“YET” gives the power back to you. 😉

What’s something new you are learning that you could give yourself more grace for? đŸ–€

Mindfulness
What is mindfulness anyways?

It’s when you purposefully take time to pull yourself into the present moment, without judgment or need to control.

Letting go of the past, relinquishing control of the future. Noticing the now without judgment.

There are sooooo many ways to do this.

Not just meditation.

It can be something super simple
.It doesn’t have to be anything extraordinary.

It’s more about noticing the good. Even when there may be “bad” present.

Noticing enjoyable sensory experiences.

You can be mindful while doing something as mundane as the dishes, feeling the hot water on your hands and smelling the soap.

Feeling the sun on your skin.

Noticing the landscape and colors outside when you’re driving to work.

Feeling your sheets and noticing how comfy your mattress feels before going to bed.

Smelling a candle.

Petting a dog.

Mindfulness can be super simple and it’s so important.

Its little mindset shifts like this that can make a huge difference.

Shifting focus away from what’s bothering you, and focusing on the things you can enjoy.

Easier said than done, I know.

That’s why it’s called a practice.

Little moments and shifts in your thinking really do add up đŸ–€

What’s one small moment you can be present for today?

Something I teach to my clients is what I call an “emotional regulation menu”.

The first part is physical, the second vocal, and the third is breath work.

You can pick one (or more) from each category when you’re feeling activated.

A lot of the methods are vagus nerve stimulation techniques
.Tools to regulate your nervous system and help you chill.

I’m not into gate keeping. Sooo:

Here’s the menu— take 5 minutes, find a quiet place, and pick one or more from each category:

Vocal:
đŸ–€Scream into a pillow
đŸ–€Hum
đŸ–€Put on a song you love and belt it out

Physical:
đŸ–€Hold onto some ice cubes
đŸ–€Splash cool water on your face or wrists
đŸ–€Punch a pillow or hit your bed with one
đŸ–€Eat something super sour (sour candy, slice of lemon)
đŸ–€Dance to a song you like
đŸ–€Stomp your feet
đŸ–€Press your feet hard into the ground until they shake
đŸ–€Clench and release your fists multiple times

Breath work:
đŸ–€Exhale fully until you can’t anymore
đŸ–€Take breaths that are shorter on inhale and longer on exhale
đŸ–€Box breaths (in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4)

Keep in mind sometimes it takes a few tries to find what works best for you! One method may work better for you than others
everyone is different.

Any more you want to add to the list?? â˜ș

đŸȘŽ When you are freaking out
try changing your verbiage to the third person.

In hard moments, we may say things to ourselves like:

“I am so overwhelmed”
“I can’t do this anymore”

Instead, try changing your inner monologue.

Shift the “I” statements to
“Danielle is overwhelmed”
“Danielle can’t do this anymore”

This helps depersonalize the emotion. It helps us see the feelings as a human experience, and as something temporary. It gives hard moments so much less power over us.

Your words are spells cast to the universe, choose them wisely!

Try it and let me know what you think..

I don’t know who needs to hear this
. but you don’t have to do everything with your kids.

I love hiking.

I don’t love hiking with my kids.

They whine after 0.25 miles. I can’t get my heart rate up because they’re zig-zagging, collecting rocks, and arguing. I still take them sometimes, but I also hike alone.

And that’s okay.

It’s okay to enjoy things without your kids.
Taking care of yourself doesn’t take away from them, it gives more back.
