Have diabetes? Your feet need a little attention every day!
Diabetes can affect circulation and sensation in your feet, meaning small cuts, blisters, or sores may go unnoticed. A simple daily routine can help you catch problems early.
Here are 5 daily foot care habits to practice:
👀 1. Check your feet. Look at the tops, soles, heels, and between your toes. Use a mirror or ask someone to help if needed.
🧼 2. Wash and dry thoroughly. Use warm—not hot—water, and dry carefully between your toes.
🧴 3. Moisturize dry skin. Apply lotion to dry areas, but avoid putting it between your toes.
👟 4. Ask your doctor about proper footwear. If you have diabetes, ask your healthcare provider whether you qualify for therapeutic shoes and inserts. Insurance plans may help cover the cost for eligible patients. The Shoe Guys can help you navigate the process and find footwear to support your foot health. 💙
🚩 5. Don't ignore changes. Contact your healthcare provider promptly if you notice a blister, cut, redness, swelling, a wound, or a change in skin color or temperature. Seek urgent care for a rapidly worsening problem or signs of infection.
Remember: Don't walk barefoot, use heating pads on your feet, or try to remove corns and calluses yourself.
Your daily routine matters, but regular foot exams with your healthcare team matter, too!
