Say hello to VOICEcorps volunteer Jason Jones! 💙

Jason first learned about VOICEcorps back in 1985 when we were known as CORRS (Central Ohio Radio Reading Service) when he saw an ad on WTTE-TV channel 28! 📺

As a child he would often pretend to be a radio announcer and was encouraged by his older brother to volunteer, and he took him up on the suggestion. Boy, are we glad he did! ☺️

Outside of volunteering with us, Jason enjoys scrapbooking, model railroading and numismatics (the study of currency). He enjoys reading books on business and anything written by Michael Baisden.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and have varied interests, but all of them have a passion for bringing information to our audience of blind, low vision, and print-disabled individuals so that they may keep up with current events, hear a voter's guide or the grocery ads, and be entertained with our original programming.

If you would like to join them, please click after the star icon in the comments down below! ⬇⬇⬇

Today we celebrate White Cane Day! 👩‍🦯‍➡️

White Cane Day (sometimes called White Cane Safety Day) has been observed nationally since October 15th 1964. We take this day to reflect on and acknowledge the achievements of those who are blind or those who have low vision and the freedom and independence that white canes can offer those individuals.

Our broadcast reading service also helps to bring independence to our listeners with voices from our wonderful volunteers you can depend on to read the news, weather, your favorite magazines and MORE! 👏

Long-time VOICEcorps volunteer (since 2020) Neal Shapiro is set to receive a special honor! 👏

Neal will be honored at the Agudas Achim Brotherhood’s annual fundraiser on October 21st naming him the 2026 Man of the Year!

According to the article published by Columbus Jewish News, Dave Philips, executive director of Congregation Agudas Achim in Bexley said of Neal, “When we asked him, ‘Would you please allow us to honor you because you are amazingly deserving,’ his response was, ‘Anything you need from me, I’m here to help. It was so humble, and so Neal.”

We couldn’t have said to better ourselves. 😊

Neal records the TV listings for us here at VOICEcorps and has been a huge advocate for us and our audience and deserves *all* the praise! 🙌🏻

P.S.- Did you know we read Columbus Jewish News every Tuesday at 7:30 PM?

For blind and low vision musicians, the Midwest is doing it best! 👏

A study out of Indiana University Bloomington authored by faculty there says that blind and low vision musicians face unique challenges particularly when learning or performing with a bowed-string instrument such as a violin or viola. 🎻

This article that we are sharing, written by the Violin Channel, says “ to help bridge these gaps, the study suggests practice designs focused on non-visual and real-time calibration, including an augmented bow tracker that can signal direction deviations, a bow-hold aid to monitor hand tension, and a wearable forearm band to track left-hand alignment.”

Once again we want to shout-out our neighbors in Indiana for doing this work. This is an exciting development for not only musicians but for the visually-impaired community as a whole. ☺️

VOICEcorps recognizes October as Blindness Awareness Month. 👁️‍🗨️

According to the CDC, 1 million Americans have complete and total vision loss along with the 7-9 million individuals who have “significant” vision loss. Many more are under-diagnosed.

What does this mean? 🤔
You or someone you love, a co-worker, a neighbor, or a friend are part of that statistic.

VOICEcorps is a FREE broadcast service you can utilize to keep up with the news (local and national), with what’s being printed in magazines and books, and as a source of entertainment.

Scroll down to the comments and click after the pink heart icon to tune in via our online stream! If you have any questions on how to access our broadcast, please leave them in the comments! ⬇

Join volunteer reader Cyndi Edger every Saturday at 4PM for an hour of stories on cats and dogs and why we love them on Paws and Claws!

Some are personal anecdotes from the writers about their own experiences with beloved pets, and other stories are about animal shenanigans that have made it in the news.

Paws and Claws is curated and presented for the entertainment of our audience of listeners who are blind, have low vision or who have a condition that makes reading printed materials difficult or impossible.

It’s true, all VOICEcorps listeners are able to hear grocery ads every Thursday at Noon! 🛒

We air grocery ads for Kroger, Giant Eagle, Aldi and Meijer as well as provide the latest in food news. 🥗
