Medial elbow pain is a common symptoms for a lot of individuals in the hypermobile community. This can be a result of hyperextension, instability, laxity or a combination of all things. The symptoms can be pain, numbness/tingling, popping/cracking, and many more. This is a kinesiology tape technique I like to use to give feedback to the joint and muscles surrounding the joint.

There are other ways to immobilize/firmly support the elbow joint, however this technique using RockTape 🔥 Go Stronger, Longer is more about giving different input to the joint. This can be for any activity and as long as it’s tolerable, can be worn overnight!

What do you use to support elbow pain or subluxation? Leave a comment below!

The Oval 8 sizing kits from 3-Point Products can be a great way to trial splints for hypermobile fingers. This kit comes with sizes 2-15 and will give a lot of options for trialing on many joints and fingers. These splints are designed to block hyper extension of the PIP and DIP joints. The only challenge is that they are not meant to overlap and wear on both the PIP and DIP joints simultaneously.

This kit costs about $45 and you can then order additional individual splints for the digits you need!

Nerve compressions can be really common in the hypermobile community. Joint instability can cause over contraction of muscles, challenges for sensing end ranges and increase risk for nerve irritation (connective tissue issues).

After prolonged pressure on a nerve, it’s is very common for symptoms to arise. This can be numbness, tingling, limited movement, and pain.

Nerve glides can be really helpful tool to improve the conduction of sensory and motor messaging into the arm.

If we are looking to prevent nerve compression from happening all together, I like to think of gentle ways to prevent excessive time spent at end ranges. Using a small towel and light wrap at the elbow can still allow for range of motion while blocking positions that may cause irritation.

Sometimes we need an added layer of support for our daily activities. And sometimes our skin isn’t able to tolerate other techniques kinesiology tape. So I wanted to share some additional tools to try and what activities I find wearing them most helpful.

I have a link in my bio to find these splints more easily or a google search should take you to the right spot!

I’ve been having combined wrist and elbow symptoms recently and this taping technique using RockTape 🔥 Go Stronger, Longer has been helping dramatically. I am using a stronger style of tape but I have tried it using the more gentle versions as well!

Both wrists and elbow can be problematic in those of us with hypermobility so having a lot of options for support can be really helpful!

I’ll be posting more wrist and elbow ideas this week! Let me know if you have requests in the comments below!

Today I was at the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT) conference where I was able to talk with so many hand therapist about Silver Ring Splint’s and the how splinting can be supportive for many different types of diagnosis. As a hand therapist myself, it’s really exciting to be able to connect and share ways to support a hand therapist’s hands as well.

Here’s a quick assessment and recommendations for this therapist who presents with hypermobility and instability! It’s so exciting to see the differences it makes when someone feels supported and confident in their hands function!

The MCP joint can be a place for hand pain and tension for many people. And it’s hard to find a splint or a technique to provide input to this area because of its location in the had.

When I learned about the EDS splint from Silver Ring Splint Company back in 2015, I didn’t realize them how much of a challenge this joint is for so many patients (even as a hand therapist!)! This splint provides support and feedback to both the dorsal and volar aspects of the joint so the risk of subluxation is minimized.

This splint is typically suggested to be worn in the middle finger however many people benefit from wearing on the index and ring fingers as well.

Preventative care is something really important to me as an occupational therapist. If you’re experiencing occasional thumb pain or you have a family history of hand arthritis, it could be helpful to make this simple modification to how you use your hand throughout the day!

In hypermobility patients we are often assessing joints that go into hyperextension. But what I’m finding in my work as a hand therapist is that there are patients who also present with instability for finger flexion. This can lead to challenges with grip strength, fine motor control and other daily activities.

Working with Silver Ring Splint Company and so many patients in the hypermobility spectrum, I’ve been able to work with so many patients who have hand challenges. It’s important to be able to share this information so therapy practitioners can be better equipped to support these patients!

If you’re an occupation or physical therapist who looking to learn more about how to support hypermobile Hands, send me a DM and I’ll put you on the list for upcoming webinars. Last night we had an incredible webinar where we learned about how to utilize Silver Ring Splint for patients with hyper mobility can’t wait to offer the next one!

As an occupational therapist who works hypermobile hands, I typically see adults in my practice. However as a hypermobile human with hypermobile kiddos, my awareness has really opened up to how we can work on preventative and support care REALLY EARLY in life.

Not as a way to “fix bad handwriting” or “correct someone’s grip” but to really understand how the body can be better supportive so that it feels safe in the activities we do.

Thank you to everyone who shared the Twist n Write tools, they have been empowering for the few kiddos I do see! I keep learning and it’s one of my favorites things!
