The Center for Health Design Research: We help facilitate research on how the design of the built environment affects outcomes.

The Center for Health Design is a non-profit organization - through design research, education and advocacy we improve and maximize health, safety and wellness in environments where people live, work and heal. A major initiative is the Pebble Project, a unique and dynamic collaborative, where forward-thinking healthcare, design, and industry professionals learn, research, and share information with one another. Our website has more than 40 free research reports and whitepapers that link the built environment to outcomes and searchable databases of relevant research and project examples. Education: Our Evidence-based Design Accreditation & Certification (EDAC) program is an internationally recognized educational program that awards credentials to individuals who demonstrate a thorough understanding of how to apply an evidence-based process to plan and design healthcare facilities. With more than 1,200 certified individuals since its launch in 2009, EDAC is quickly becoming one of the healthcare design industry’s most important credentials. Each year, more than 4,000 individuals attend our annual Healthcare Design conference and 30,000 subscribe to Healthcare Design magazine (both produced by Vendome Group in association with CHD). Advocacy: We recognize and promote excellence in design and leadership through 5 award programs. By providing input into the Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities, we are advocating for change in the building codes and standards. A partner in the Healthier Hospitals Initiative, we are an active participant in a coalition of major health systems and organizations committed to improving sustainability and safety across the healthcare sector. Hundreds of individuals and organizations are engaged to support our work and help transform the industry through our affiliate membership program.

Two goals are often at the center of current care models for mental or behavioral health: safety and healing. In the Emergency Department, design has traditionally focused on safety for both patients and staff through checklists for ligature-resistance. Newer approaches place a strong emphasis on healing, as well, resulting in a therapeutic approach for a more flexible use of a Treatment Room.

Each organization will need to balance priorities to meet specific performance standards and anticipated patient acuity to establish an appropriate solution. Some organizations may decide on a universal approach - the design must be flexible enough to accommodate a range of patient acuity, including those who may be experiencing behavioral or mental health issues. Generally, the evidence base for design of the Therapeutic ED Treatment Room focuses on deinstitutionalized design aesthetic that provides a sense of being both welcoming and safe. Our monthly Tools & Resources newsletter features a variety of Center-produced resources to help inform our design community of the best and latest research, tools and design solutions.

The topic of our October 2026 newsletter is the healing effects of nature. Exposure and access to nature, gardens and outdoor views have proven, restorative capabilities that can impact patients, families and staff in numerous, positive ways. Nature can help reduce stress, provide calming distraction, improve emotional and overall wellbeing, and even help speed up the rate of healing and recovery.

To support improved care and medical outcomes, and enhance the experience for patients and their families, today’s design, facility and care professionals must advance their understanding of nature’s role in health, and incorporate the best and latest research, tools and design solutions. https://loom.ly/6aVNKNM

Yesterday, The Center's Resilient Aging Environments Network (RAEN) held its annual in-person meeting and visited Three Pillars Senior Living Communities in Dousman, Wisconsin, hosted by Jeff Beagle, Senior Director of Projects. With the new facility set to open in January 2027, the group had the opportunity to hear the evolution of the community from its first building, built in 1905, to the current facility. The meeting brought RAEN members together to connect, exchange ideas and strengthen collaboration across the senior living and design community.

Mental health issues are faced by individuals around the world in every culture and age group. According to the World Health Organization, approximately one third of the adult population worldwide suffers from a mental disorder such as anxiety, depression or schizophrenia.

Policy regulations and standards that affect our approach vary from region and continent; from the design of forensic facilities to mental health hubs, from care centers to transitional housing. There are multiple challenges. There are also promising trends. But we need to do more to create responsive environments for behavioral health, and at times this means challenging policy through design.

Watch the webinar The Spaces In-between: Changing Policy by Design in our Behavioral & Mental Health Toolbox sponsored by Accurate Lock & Hardware Co., Altro, architecture+, ModuForm, Inc and Whitehall Manufacturing to hear how we can create more supportive environments for a population with increasing needs.
