Fall weather can make it easier to get outside for hiking, yard work, festivals, sports, and other seasonal activities.

If your joints are not used to the extra activity, however, suddenly doing too much can leave you sore or uncomfortable.

Give your body time to warm up, wear shoes suited to the activity, watch your footing on leaves or uneven ground, and avoid carrying more than you can safely manage at once.

Most importantly, increase activity gradually rather than trying to fit an entire season’s worth of outdoor work into one afternoon.

Persistent swelling, limited movement, or joint pain that keeps returning deserves attention.

Numbness, tingling, weakness, cramping, or pain in an arm or leg can sometimes be related to a nerve or muscle problem.

Electrodiagnostic testing helps evaluate how well your nerves and muscles are working and can provide useful information about where symptoms may be coming from.

An EMG (electromyography) measures electrical activity in the muscles, while a nerve conduction study measures how quickly and effectively electrical signals travel through the nerves.

These tests may be used when evaluating conditions such as:
Peripheral neuropathy
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Radiculopathy
Certain muscle disorders

The results can help guide diagnosis and determine what type of treatment may be appropriate.

Joint pain can come from many causes, and arthritis is one of the most common.

According to the CDC, more than 53 million U.S. adults have diagnosed arthritis.

For some patients, joint injections may be part of the treatment plan. Depending on the diagnosis, medication can be delivered directly into the affected joint to help reduce pain and inflammation.

Whether an injection is appropriate depends on the joint involved, the cause of pain, previous treatments, and the individual’s overall health.

An evaluation can help determine whether joint injections may be a suitable option.

Nerve-related pain can feel very different from ordinary muscle soreness.

Some people describe burning, tingling, numbness, electric-like sensations, or sharp pain that travels along an arm or leg.

A peripheral nerve block places medication near a specific nerve or group of nerves involved in transmitting pain signals. Depending on the clinical situation, the procedure may be used to provide temporary relief, reduce inflammation, or help identify whether a particular nerve is contributing to the symptoms.

Because nerve pain has many possible causes, the first step is determining which structure may be involved.

Chronic low back pain can have many different causes, which means one treatment does not fit every patient.

The Intracept procedure is designed specifically for selected patients with vertebrogenic pain associated with changes in the vertebral endplates.

During the minimally invasive procedure, radiofrequency energy is used to target the basivertebral nerve, reducing its ability to transmit pain signals. Apex notes that potential candidates commonly have low back pain lasting at least six months, inadequate improvement with conservative treatment, and appropriate MRI findings such as Modic Type 1 or Type 2 changes.

Intracept is not intended for every type of back pain, so determining the pain source and reviewing imaging are important first steps.

When low back pain continues for months, identifying the actual pain generator becomes increasingly important.

One possible source is vertebrogenic pain, which is associated with changes in the vertebral endplates—the structures between the spinal discs and vertebral bones.

The basivertebral nerve carries pain signals from these endplates. In selected patients, MRI findings known as Modic Type 1 or Type 2 changes may support a diagnosis of vertebrogenic pain.

This is not the cause of every case of chronic low back pain. A detailed evaluation and imaging review are necessary to determine whether the basivertebral nerve may be involved.

A sudden pull or sharp pain while lifting may come from overstretched muscles or supporting tissues in the back.

Many uncomplicated strains improve with time and appropriate activity modification. But the symptoms surrounding the pain matter.

Pain that travels down an arm or leg, numbness, tingling, weakness, or symptoms that progressively worsen may point to something beyond a simple muscle strain.

Seek urgent medical care for serious warning signs such as new loss of bladder or bowel control, rapidly worsening weakness, or difficulty walking.

For persistent back pain without emergency symptoms, an evaluation can help determine whether muscles, joints, discs, or nerves may be involved.

Persistent knee pain is not always caused by a problem isolated to the knee joint.

The nerves surrounding the knee can contribute to pain, and symptoms from the hip or spine may sometimes be felt around the thigh or knee. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons notes that overlapping hip and spine problems can make determining the true source of pain more complicated.

That is why identifying where the pain is actually coming from matters before choosing a treatment.

At Apex Interventional Pain & Spine, evaluation may include looking at the joints, surrounding structures, nerves, and other possible pain generators based on the individual’s symptoms.

Not all neck or back pain comes from a disc or pinched nerve.

Facet joints are small joints along the back of the spine that help guide movement and provide stability. When they become irritated or inflamed, pain may worsen with movements such as bending, arching, or twisting.

A facet joint injection places medication directly at the targeted joint. Depending on the situation, it may help determine whether the facet joint is contributing to the pain while also reducing inflammation and discomfort.

Facet injections are not appropriate for every type of spinal pain, so diagnosis comes first.
