On October 28, HHS released a proposed interim enforcement-discretion policy identifying six peptide bulk drug substances for potential use in patient-specific 503A compounding.

The proposal comes with detailed safeguards, including a valid patient-specific prescription, preparation by a licensed pharmacist in a 503A pharmacy, FDA-registered sourcing with a certificate of analysis, and one listed peptide per compounded preparation. The proposed policy also outlines adverse-event reporting and labeling requirements.

This is a proposed policy, not FDA approval, and it does not apply to research-use-only products.

A look inside CRE8’s non sterile compounding lab. 🧪

Depending on a patient’s needs and a prescriber’s direction, compounded medications can sometimes be prepared in different dosage forms, including creams, capsules, troches, suppositories, and more.

That flexibility is one of the things that makes compounding unique. It gives the pharmacy and provider more options when a standard dosage form may not be the best fit for the patient.

Compounding Pharmacy 101. 💊🧪

A compounding pharmacy prepares medications based on a licensed prescriber’s prescription for an individual patient when a commercially available medication may not meet that patient’s specific needs.

That could mean preparing a different dosage form for someone who has difficulty swallowing a pill or another appropriate formulation based on the patient’s prescription.
