What did glasses look like in the early 1900s? This pair, worn by my great grandfather circa 1916 worked by pinching his nose bridge to stay in place (this style of spectacles were called Pince Nez).
This picture was taken at his graduation from the Loyola Chicago school of Dentistry. The cord over his ear was an early form of glasses safety guard to keep them from landing on the ground if they fell off.
It is likely that these spectacles were manufactured by American Optical Company. Fun fact: we feature many American-Made American Optical frames in our office today! Stop by and try on a piece of history!
