It was a pleasure to sit down with with Kurtis, Charles, and Kole last week at True Country 106.3 - WCDQ-FM to talk about mindfulness and the kinds of local programs we offer. Check out this link if you missed the broadcast of the interview.

And, if you are interested in joining our fall Healthy Mind's group, please do the initial survey now (we'll be closing recruitment for that study this week!)

Wabash College's Dr. Neil Schmitzer-Torbert stopped by the studio Wednesday afternoon to talk about Mindful IN MoCo, which focuses on MBSR.

This fall, we are excited to continue exploring the free Healthy Minds app, to help people get started or continue their mindfulness practice. To learn more about mindfulness, and how even short, regular, practice can be helpful, this interview with Dr. Richard Davidson, one of the developers of the Healthy Minds app is a great introduction to the science behind the program:

You don’t need hours of meditation to change your brain. 🧠

Founder and Director of the Center of Healthy Minds Dr. Richie Davidson breaks down the science behind neuroplasticity, “mental reps,” mindfulness, and why just 5 minutes a day may be enough to start building new habits for your mind.

Tune in to learn how small moments can create meaningful change.

Mindfulness can help us manage challenges in life, and let us feel more peace in the middle of our busy days. But, it is hard for many of us to get a regular mindfulness practice started, or to keep up our good habits.

If you are looking to learn more about mindfulness and how to develop this skill, please join our Healthy Minds group (which is using a free mindfulness app)!

Our habits can be all the ways that we act mindlessly, or on autopilot. But, with intention, we can practice also build the habit of being present, of coming back to what is here and now whenever we notice we have been pulled into worrying or drifted off into daydreaming.

This image comes from the Healthy Minds app, which is a great way to get started or renew your mindfulness practice.

Have you ever wondered, what is Zen?

Join us this Saturday (Sept 12th, 1-3:30pm) at Quest For Balance Wellness for a free workshop to learn about Zen practice. On Saturday, we will introduce sitting meditation and practice in the style of the Sanshin Zen Community (a Soto Zen temple in Bloomington).

This workshop is a great opportunity to learn about the basics of the sitting meditation that is the core of this Zen tradition. We will introduce the basics of Buddhist and Zen teachings, answer your questions, and spend time exploring sitting and walking meditation practice. We'll also give you information about how to connect with Zen meditation groups in Crawfordsville and in our region.

The image below shows the traditional cushions (round zafu and rectangular zabuton) used in Zen. On Saturday, we'll cover both chair and floor options for sitting meditation.

Interested in learning more about mindfulness this fall?

We are starting a program this month to explore a free mindfulness app (Healthy Minds), created by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This free program is a part of a research project that Neil Schmitzer-Torbert (of the Wabash College Psychology Department) is conducting to learn how to get the most out of these kinds of apps.

During the fall, people who participate will be asked to use the Healthy Minds app daily, and we'll offer some weekly drop-in sessions (in-person in Crawfordsville, and virtually for folks out of town) to talk about mindfulness practice and working with the app.

Interested? You can learn more and get started on our site:
